  • 2002 company errand runner

Nick (Tuck91) reminded me I hadn't posted this yet, so here it is.

On December 28, 2010 after 31 years of accident free driving I did this:

The president of the company I work for and I have known each other for over 30 years. We're like brothers so when he heard of my misfortune he handed me the keys to the company errand runner and said to use it as long as my baby was in the body shop. This is a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. It has about 120,000 miles on it. It was a sales rep's car and then a former company exec's car. It sits in our parking lot 24/7/365 until someone needs to run an errand.
It hasn't had ANY love whatsoever the past couple of years. So besides keeping it gassed up I decided the least I could do was to put some of my talent, time and Meguiar's to some use.

The first weekend I had it home I gave it an ONR bath drying it with Meguiar's Water Magnets. I then clay barred it using Meguiar's white clay and ONR at clay lube ratio. This was followed by M205 on a CCS white polishing pad on the hood only. There were two rather nasty swirls caused by the incorrect method of removing a bird bomb. The vehicle was then given two thin coats of NXT 2.0 on a gray CCS pad. Wax was removed using Supreme Shine Mf towels. I followed up the next AM with a wipe down using UQD not because it needed it but because I needed garage time....

^The vehicle here was just in from the pouring rain. The area that appears to still have wax protection is one of the scars. I'm not sure what was used, but it left an oily residue and major swirling.

Here is the other spot after I corrected it and applied two thin coats of NXT 2.0.

Here are a couple out in the driveway before I put her away for the weekend. Of course we got snow the following week, but another ONR wash followed by UQD and she's back to beautiful.

The windows were cleaned inside and out with Meguiar's Xmas box glass cleaner (I love that stuff.) They were then treated to Rain-X. The interior was vacuumed and cleaned using APC at 10:1 using old MF towels and a toothbrush for the steering wheels and door handles. YUCK. The plastic and vinyl then got a coat of QID.

The water running down the vehicle is from the garage door dripping.

The hood came out real nice considering the vehicle is 9 years old and sits outside all day. I plan to bring her home on a warm weekend this spring to polish and wax her.
The clear coat on the wheels is shot, so they were cleaned with ONR and left alone. Exterior plastics and tires got Hyper Dressing the following AM.
I picked my baby up this past Tuesday, sorry no pics. No wax for at least 90 days on the freshly pained passenger side. With all the snow we've been getting it may be a while before she gets a good bath

    Great Work Paul!

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
    Remove swirls my friends.

Very nice work as usual Paul.

Looks pretty good for being close to ten years old, plus never being garaged.

How is your car coming along?

Thank you. I don't plan on wrecking for at least another 30+ years, but I'll keep the offer in mind.

Thank you Nick. Here she is today after an ONR bath and an inspection.

There is some minor cleaning to be done and I found an area of orange peel that I'll have them wet sand this spring.

They also left a lot of polish in the door jambs and margins, nothing a little detail spray and elbow grease can't fix.

The trunk lid though will get clay barred and polished tonight followed by wax. This was flawless before they got a hold of it. Come warmer weather I'll do the rest of the vehicle. I have to wait 90 days to do anything beyond washing on the passenger side.

I'm just happy to have her back.

Glad to see the car back in good shape.

I find a good blast with a pressure washer will take care of the polish in the cracks & crevices of the exterior.

Some ONR, microfibers, & a detail brush should make quick work of the jambs.

I am sure once spring rolls around you will dedicate a weekend to making the G8 better than new.

              Great job! Mercury looks great!

That stinks about your car. It looks like the body shop did a good job though besides the orange peel of course. The car looks really good.

When my dad needed his fender done he brought it to someone he knew. As soon as it got back I decided to take a look at her.........tracers galore were in that paint along with swirls. Incorrect technique with everything. Best part is that my dad says that this new guy was a lot better than the other guy. I can only imagine........
