  • neuralfraud's 2009 Pontiac G8 GT with "DISO" - the makeover

This is my first sort of "makeover"/detail work post, so hope you all enjoy!

My 2009 G8 GT came with a severe case of DISO - Dealer Installed Swirl Option, and even a few terrible scratch touchup attempts. Overall the paint is pretty good and based on my information gathering from here, I went ahead on the suggestion to use Meguiar's Ultimate Compound with my PC 7424.

I just bought this vehicle 2 weeks ago, and it appeared to be nice looking, but after the first rain, the swirls were revealed. They must have used some heavy filler - who knows.

I clayed the car with Meguiar's Quick Clay, it was absolutely filthy. Greenish/brown scum filled the bar, I must have folded the thing a dozen times. I went over all horizontal surfaces, the fenders and quarter panels, the doors seemed good enough.

Just after washing and claying, the swirls:

As you can see, the sunlight reflection is distorted and the swirling is extremely evident.

Another shot of the decklid and C pillar:

I picked up some SONUS pads from Four Star Products and my plan of attack was to first cut using Ultimate Compound on their white Swirl Removing Pad and then polish using Ultimate Compound on their orange Finishing Pad.

Today I was only able to do the first cutting pass as I ran out of time.

I made 5 to 6 passes on each panel with the speed setting on 5, using medium pressure and a slow arm speed, overlapping my passes by 50% except in some of the tighter areas where I couldn't really do that - perfect excuse for some smaller pads I suppose.

After cutting the hood, I wiped off all of the product with a microfiber cloth and then took a few pictures, using the "flash" on my iphone to act as a revealing light.

    Hood, after cutting:

This so far is a huge improvement. I proceeded to finish the rest of the car, although halfway through the pad started throwing little bits of product, so it probably would have been good to try and use a plastic knife or something to clean the pad a bit. I'm not sure on that though - advice welcome

After finishing the car, I backed it into the sunny part of the parking lot and took some shots attempting to get as much sun onto the surface as possible. It was late and the sun was fast disappearing!

Swirl-free Front Fender and Hood, Left Side:

Swirl-free Front Fender and Hood, Right Side:

I hope that tomorrow I can finish this, I will go over the car with the Finishing Pad and try to get some better perspective pics for a proper before and after comparison, along with the rest of the car

After the compounding, I will finish the car with Gold Glass liquid wax.

Now, as you can probably see, the front grill, and also on the rear "diffuser", it has this mesh-plastic, that seems like it would be a pain in the *** to get some product into, I've thought about getting a peice of foam and cutting it into 1" squares, saturating that with some natural shine and running it through. Any suggestions on how to efficiently detail that kind of grille?

    Will post more tomorrow!

I wanted to edit and include a after shot of the front-end, but the forum wouldn't let me

      It's a G8!

        Looking very good.

To get a even coat on the grill, you could apply product to a foam detail stick. That would give even coverage and make the job go faster.

          J.A: Thanks, will try that.

          Day 2: More Ultimate Compound

Today I was able to use a buddy's garage to finish working on the G8, however 5pm was rolling around and the wife was a calling!

We sprayed down the car, dried it with my Meguiar's waffle weave microfiber and I explained to him what I had done yesterday and looked at the before and after pictures. I decided to stick with the original plan of doing the second pass with the finishing pad as the swirls and scratches were drastically reduced. I did a test spot on the hood using 5 passes on one side of it, at this point the only scratches visible were extremely small and so far I think I can live with it.

I finished the hood, and fenders and took a picture of the amazing reflection from the garage.

The hood, Second Application of Ultimate Compound with finishing pad:

Now I think that was pretty decent. I finished the rest of the car performing 5 passes on each section again with the speed on "5", though I'm not certain if it would have been better to go a bit slower for this application.

After wiping removing the product and being sure to do my final wipe with a clean towel, I noticed that there seemed be a lot of oils which created a sort of haze effect, I took a picture using the flash on my iPhone to show this:

          Oils?

I had to switch wipe cloths somewhat frequently it seemed like I just couldn't get all of the product off.

I still have to apply the wax - will the wax take care of that or do I need to clean it somehow?

In parting, the before and after's:

          Before:

After two applications of Ultimate Compound with a DA Polisher:

            and

I use Hyper Dressing for the grill and rear diffuser. My next mod for the G8 is a GXP rear diffuser, it's about $75 and good bye honeycomb! I clean the front grill with a boar's hair brush and whatever car shampoo is in the bucket. I like Hyper Dressing because you can spray it on, wipe up any over spray and walk away. Hyper Dressing is available direct from Meguiar's or if you want to try it in a 32 oz size first, ADS has it available that way. This is great stuff for under the hood as well, plus it dilutes from super shiny to matte finish.

That looks pretty good, I will try that. I will probably do an a/b with that vs product on foam-stick method suggested by J.A. just to see what I can come up with and how much time it takes... 5 minutes won't kill me, but 15 minutes might!

Looks great. The "oils" you see may acaullly be very light marring from the Ultimate Compound. It is a compound after all. You could go over the car with Swirlx if it really bothers you.

                Great joob though. Incredible transformation.

It's all good. I just looked at the number of posts and made an incorrect assumption.

As far as marring, I thought of that, but they smear when I wipe the surface so I thought it was leftover residue/oils. At this point I'm wondering if I should attempt to clean any UC residue with a cleaner product before applying wax, that should reveal any marring correct?

There are no polishing oils in UC as far as I know. Try wiping it down with some QD or something. The UC should not be doing any fillling as it really has no properties that would fill so using an IPA wipe-down shouldn't reveal anything you're not already seeing.
