  • 2004 Volkswagon Passat

    2004 Volkswagon Passat, 73k miles.

    One step exterior, full interior.

The interior was not the worst I have done but it was pretty bad.

Note the amount of built up dirt and grime on the seats and center console.

The car turned out nice in the end but was a far stretch from perfect.

    A few befores:

The arm rest and seat is pure black almolst:

I cleaned the wheels, tires, and wells with Super Degreaser, Wheel Brightener, All Purpose Cleaner, and then agitated with various brushes, foamed with Deep Crystal Car Wash, and then rinsed.

I foamed the exterior with 6oz of Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo & Conditioner in my foam gun and then agitated with several Meguiars wash mitts, then rinsed and dried with Water Magnets.

I clayed the paint with the Smooth Surface Clay Kit and then did a one step polish with #66 - Quick Detailer (Cleaner/Wax) and a 5.5" LC green pad on my PC.

Note the amount of dirt and grime lifted from the paint onto the pad. I used liberal amounts of M66 to take advantage of its cleaning ability and worked it in until it had broken down to a thin film. It was left to dry while the interior was being detailed, then finally removed with a Supreme Shine.

I gave the carpet and seats a very long dry brush and vac, then pulled the mats from the interior.

The seats were cleaned with All Purpose Cleaner Plus and terry cloths, the cleaning solution was rinsed out with a hot cotton towel, shop vac'd, towel dried, then air dried.

The carpet was cleaned the same way as well except for the use of a stiff bristled ADS carpet brush.

All vinyl and other hard surfaces were cleaned with All Purpose Cleaner, terry cloths, and various brushes, then dressed with Quik Interior Detailer.

The glass was wiped clean inside and out with Glass Cleaner Concentrate at 10:1 and cotton cloths.

The jambs were cleaned with soap and water, rinsed out with a hose then towel dried.

I applied an coat of Ultimate Quik Wax to the paint and wheels.

Tires, wells and trim dressed with All Season Dressing.

I cleaned the headlights up a little with some PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish on my PC. they were pure yellow before and I got them a little better. Had some spare time and I always do something extra just for fun.

Excellent work, excellent process description and excellent results on that dirty car. I think we can learn a lot from your write-up.

Beautiful European car, by the way. I guess you're aware that it's Volkswagen (the people's car) and not "Volkswagon"

Sometimes those old beater daily drivers are the ones that show the most improvement from a detail. Even if it's not a full correction. This customer should feel like they just got a newer car to replace the one they gave you! Nicely done.

                    Thanks.

I do not think the car is worth correcting, but just needed to be cleaned up really well. Its just a daily driver.

                    Thanks for the kind words.

Is that a 5-gallon Lowes' bucket you are using, next to the foam gun? If so, do you have Grit Guard on them? I brought my Grit Guard to many stores and tried fitting them on the 5-gallon buckets they sell. The Home Depot bucket is the closest I've seen to fit in the bottom of the bucket. However, there's a little (~1/4") gap between the Grit Guard and the bucket.

Oh, I see...I thought you were using it to clean the paint panels. I do not use Grit Guard when cleaning my wheel and wheel wells as well.
