  • Golf Exterior Detail – Lots Of Pics

    Hi,

This was my first full detail with the PC. I bought the PC in December along with a few of the Megs pro range of products when I was on holiday in Florida.

I hadn’t had time to do a full detail only to try it out on different days using the techniques I had read about on various forums. First was my bonnet, then my roof, followed by dads bonnet and then my boot. Each time I saw an improvement in the results as my familiarity with the products & process improved.

This first full detail was a good test. It was my brothers lease car (VW Golf) black with 90K on the clock. It had seen more automated washes than hand washes and had very little tlc. There was a good mix of marring, swills, scratches and stone chips. To say the paint was poor was an understatement … It goes back to the lease company today (Monday) as its just been replaced with a Passat so I wanted to try my skills out while I had the chance.

The day wasn’t good (i.e. no sun and lots of rain), so I cant show any good before / after sun shots only this one of it wet :

These should give you some indication of the paint (after claying and drying) and viewed under a 500w halogen :

I masked off half of the bonnet and wing so I could monitor my work and was quite surprised at the results :

    Other comparison shots :

And these are the best after shots I have got :

    The products I used :

Clay : Megs (From quick clay kit)
Wash (and clay lube) : Megs Gold Class
    Wheels : Wonder Wheels
    Tyres : AA
Paint : #83 with Sonus orange, #80 with Sonus green & NXT by hand.

I only did the outside and didn’t top with a carnauba wax, that seemed excessive as it was only going back to the lease company …

I do have a question though, the paint (mostly on horizontal surfaces) has tiny pits all over it which are hard to see in normal daylight but jump out under halogen (also easily seen in the photos). What are these ? What causes them and how do I get rid of them if I come across them on other cars ?

    Cheers,

    WD

WD, that look stunning, what an improvement. Your brother wont want to get rid of it now.

That front wing, what a difference wow.

Was the PC easy to use? I'm toying with the idea of getting one myself. Where in Uk are you by the way.

    cheers

Yes, the PC is quite easy to use BUT I had spent a lot of time reading this and other forums before I started.

I also took a slow learning curve i.e. did a bit then packed up so I could analyse (sp ?) my results and how I thought I could improve e.g.

      1st : My bonnet - 80 + green pad then 16.
2nd : My roof - Same as above but better.
      3rd : Dads bonnet - 80 + orange pad then green pad then 16.
      4th : My boot - 83 + orange, 9 + blue, NXT then 16.

Then my brothers full car detail which you see above.

Now I am looking forward to summer to do the full monty on the Techno Violet BM

        Thanks WD

I'm probably going to get myself an old bonnet/door from the Breakers Yard and Practice on that - will let you know how I get on.

Techno Violet eh.. sounds like an M3 to me. Best of luck thats a great colour - always fancied one in Estoril Blue.

Outstanding. Unbelievable before and after! Thanks for taking the time to stop work to take pics and spending the time to upload these great pictures. Was this car run through auto carwashes often?

Not too sure about the tiny pits you mentioned though.

What a transformation! You should have charged the leasing company for detailing their car. It is far better than what they would have done!

Yes it wash run through auto car washes quite often and the roads over here get very dirty over winter.

Its not that my brother doesn’t know how to look after a car, its just that this was used as a rep mobile and his time went into looking after his ‘weekend’ car.

The deal with his company has changed though and they now give him a grant to buy his own car (golf been replaced with a passat) so I think the new one will get better attention. Time will tell ...
