  • full detail: 08 BMW 525xi Diesel

This BMW had 36000kms on the clock, looked pretty good at first sight.
I was concerned that that this had the "Carbon Black" paint code, since I`ve heard it is one of the hardest finishes to correct.
Was happy to see that the car was actually dark blue. -However, I found a paint touch-up set in the trunk that said "Carbon Schwartz".. Don`t know if it`s for this car. Don`t really know all that much about BMW paint codes

    upon arrival:

    Washing, claying:

Claying took of some contaminents int he lower part and rear bumper

all the dirt and muc coming off the car

Swirled and dull looking paint in some areas

Could feel these with my fingernail, in some areas quite deep.

    Floor mats cleaned with degreaser.
    Afterwards brushed with APC+ 7:1

Let soak after brushing, spritzed and let soak before final rinse

Leather and vinyl cleaned with soft sponge, APC+ 10:1, buffed with MF
After, dressed in Gold Class Aloe Conditioner.

Pulled her inside and had a closer look.. Masked, and got started trying out different methods for correction

Did some testing for methods for correction. -Paint was very hard, so this combo was applied:
#105 via rotary, burgundy soft buff
#105 via rotary, yellow soft buff,
#105 via rotary, orange 4" polishing lake country for tight spots/bends
#205 via PC DA, yellow soft buff
    #7 by hand
    NXT 2,0 by hand
    #26 by hand

    Some pictures from the progress:

The deeper scratches on the driver`s side get #105 via So1o wool

    CleanerWax applied to rims

Final correction stage was #205 via PC

    Interior plastics dressed in #40

Doorjambs, hinges and all cracs and crevices cleaned with APC 7:1 and Last Touch

Wheel all done, with CleanerWax and tires dressed in #40

    Final shots:

    thanks for looking!

Detailing cars is a form of art. Most appreciate it, few possess the required skill and even fewer understand it.

That sure was a lot of labor.
I like how you get the car off the ground with you ramp set-up. I have a similar set-up for working on and cleaning my motorcycle. It a real back saver.

                  Nice job.

Thanks Bill. I had this ramp set up before this job, finally!
I`m so tired of my shoulders and knees giving me a hard time..
On a job like this it was a real saver.

We had to trial it with a few cars before we backed the BMW up on it
Much easier to work the lower panels poperly, over all everything is a little better when it`s up in the air.

Nice job on the car! As for telling what paint BMW's have, open the hood and look on either the passenger side or driver side shock mount. That is where is should be located. Although I cant verify it at the moment because I am to far away from my car.

I've found the dark metallics (like the Carbon Schwartz) look amazing once you've removed all the swirls and haze from the clear coat.

Downside - it doesn't take much swirls and haze to make the finish look "dull" (i.e. hide the metallic).
