  • Carbon Fiber and New Tool

Please find below either my first attempt at paint correction on carbon fiber, my first use of a mini buffer, another attempt at humor or possibly all of the fore mentioned.

    Products and Tools Used:

    Mini Buffer
Microfiber Mini Buffer Cleaning and Polishing Pads
    Ultimate Compound
    SwirlX
    Ultimate Protectant
    Interior Detailer Wipes

I was shopping in Wally World looking for any Meguiar's products I didn't currently have in my arsenal. Here is what I found. Not sure of posting photos of competitor's products, so I have taped off the name. Although I don't think Meguiar's makes a "rotary".
    [IMG][/IMG]

Many folks on the forum have several automobiles this is my carbon fiber daily driver. The "car" is in it's folded position or using car terminology, "top down".
    [IMG][/IMG]

Here it is in the "top up" configuration.
    [IMG][/IMG]

If you look closely you will see a blemish in the carbon fiber that requires some corrective action.
    [IMG][/IMG]

The new tool comes with an assortment (one style each) of cleaning and polishing microfiber mini buffer pads. However, the accessory kit I purchased did NOT have a backing plate pad holder. I discovered if I were very careful the pads could be held in place by the brush attachments.
    [IMG][/IMG]

My finger is pointing at the blemish on lower section, "rocker panel" requiring the use of Ultimate Compound.
    [IMG][/IMG]

A quarter sized portion of UC would of course be too large, so not having a good point of reference I gobbed some onto the cleaning pad. Remember buff until the product seems to thin out, but do not let it dry as it will be difficult to remove. If you have troubles in removal, don't forget "like removes like".
    [IMG][/IMG]

I'm still pretty much a newbie at concerned car care working to solidify my "25" rating on the 0 to 1000 Stoops Scale. However, I still revert to minor mistakes as shown by this photo as I have product slinging all over the tire of the carbon fiber mode of transportation.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Next is the use of SwirlX to remove any hazing I may have created with the Ultimate Compound. Although it is unlikely that is a problem, as every time I worked the Ultimate Compound with any "passion" my pad would fly off of my jury rigged pad holder. Really need that factory backing plate.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Next using a scientifically determined amount product, which I seem to be getting every where at this stage in the project, I put some SwirlX on the mini pad.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Notice, I have corrected my mistake by installing a protective cover on the tire of the carbon fiber mode of transportation.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Wishing to take advantage of a long lasting wax on my daily driver, I opted for NXT Tech 2.0 as the last product. Got an nice shine, which should last through several washings or rain storms before needing a pre-winter recoat. Plus I wanted to avoid a repeat of the accident I had with the neighbors dog when I used #7 and #26 http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42403 Notice the blue finishing pad on the mini buffer. Just the right texture to apply NXT. Remember a thin coat wipes on and off so easily. The swipe test is just a tad difficult on a cylindrical carbon fiber surface. I waited an inordinate amount of time and the NXT came off very easily.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Next it was time to clean the seat(s) of the carbon fiber mode of transportation. I prefer a nice natural shine and a non-slick surface and these wipes were just the answer.
    [IMG][/IMG]

The final step in my project was to put a dressing on the tire(s). I was all out of the proper dressings and had to make do with what I had. This project was starting to exceed my budget. In my arsenal was Ultimate Protectant. I was concerned about getting product on the working surface of the tires, so this time I taped them off before applying product.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Here is my half and half photo. Be advised a little Ultimate Protectant goes a long ways. I perhaps have too much on the tire at this point. I don't think cost is a factor and will be able to wipe off any access.
    [IMG][/IMG]

I wish I were just a little better with a camera as this 50/50 would have shown the great patina created by Ultimate Protectant. I know from my non-carbon fiber daily driver it is long lasting protection even in rain.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Here is the completed project. One daily driver next to the other daily driver.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Thanks for checking out my little carbon fiber project and hope you had a least one chuckle.

            Nicely done, David!

            A few minor points, however:

            • The scale goes from 1 - 100, not to 1000.
            • This automatically takes you up 5 points on the scale.
            • We think we've created a monster!!!
            • Excellent documentation, so thanks for taking the time to put this write up together.
            • You're a funny guy!

1 to 1000 what was I thinking when I typed that.
Another 5....yeehaw!! Big journeys start with the smallest steps!!!
Being versatile with multiple types of buffers really helps on the Stoops Scale.

I hope this venture into humor at least helps me learn to document my real battle. The battle with the dreaded swirl.

Re: Carbon Fiber and New Tool

Look what my wife found at Wally World. The correct accessory package with the "backing plate" attachment.

Check out how the mini buffer and the pads work together.

This is a possible use of the mini buffer and a cleaning pad with some Ultimate Compound or SwirlX, working in and around badges and trim. Be advised, you are using a rotary buffer and the amount of Passion and your arm (hand) speed will determine the amount of correction or even possible damage that may occur. This photo is for demonstration purposes only and it would be strongly recommended you tape off trim pieces that maybe damaged by the buffer flying out of control.

                  As always...enjoy.

                    OK, we have to ask:

Why do you always have blue tape over the joint where the attachment meets the body of the tool? Are you trying to cover a logo, a little piece of plastic sticking out, or is the piece prone to coming apart there?

My goal was to bring some humor to the forum rather than endorsing a product, hence the covered logo. Although I doubt if anyone would follow the obviously satirical advice of newbie like me with such a low post count.

Then again, "obviously satirical" may be a relative term and more smiley faces should be added in future attempts at self directed humor.

                      Here let me start now....
