  • 1948 George Barris Chevrolet (tribute)

Yesterday, I got a call from a buddy of mine who has a tribute built 1948 George Barris Chevrolet. George Barris built two of this car for a 1958 movie "High School Confidential".
Jim asked if there was anyway I could do a quick (very quick) detail to his car as he was heading to California for the West Coast Customs show and had just a few hours to spruce up the paint. Time was so limited that we decided to leave the car on the trailer and I would do what I could. I didn't have my camera to get before pictures (my wife took it to school to get pictures of her graduating students) and really had no time for pictures anyway. However, Jim brought over his camera and I took several super fast pictures. The car had swirls and general lack of luster. It is the original paint from 1985. The paint finish is EXTREMELY hard and my test spot combo of the DA with 105/205 wasn't going to be enough to get the correction needed. I attempted the 105 on the rotary/wool with very promising results, however time was the negating factor on this detail. I put away the 105/205 and attempted the DA with polishing pad and M80. We both were surprised how well it brought out the finish and eliminated a good portion of the swirls. That was going to be the method of choice. I then followed the M80 with the M21 sealant which really turned this car around. I was so rushed that I got a few after shots while the car was still in my garage and then followed Jim home so I could get a few sun shots.

I couldn't open the doors due to the car being on the trailer so I attempt to get interior pictures through the window. Sorry for the glare.

Quite respectable short-time detail....spiffed the shine considerably..

Nice work on such a sinister looking "street sweeper".

A car that nice DOES NOT belong on a trailer.
