  • My 14 Year Old (1996) Chevrolet Suburban After Detail Work

So I finally got around to cracking down on making my old truck look as good as it possibly can at this point, since I had the day off from work, and no house work to do, either. Now, bearing in mind it is 14 years old, has 220,500 miles, and has seen some better days, I am more than astounded by the results!

I know in a couple of the pics, it has For Sale written on the back. I'm kinda-sorta wanting to get rid of it, due to gas costs and upkeep. The only thing is that, I've gotten so emotionally attached to it, it's hard to let go of it for some reason.

This truck has been in my family since DAY 1, so it is 1 OWNER, and its CUSTOM ORDERED! Even the paint, is completely original, meaning ITS NEVER BEEN REPAINTED ANYWHERE! Back in 1996, you couldn't find this paint combination anywhere, not even on showroom floors. So you might say this is a one-of-a-kind truck. It has some right front damage, thanks to a freak accident with a steel gate, but other than that, its in GREAT SHAPE! I even have all the documents for it, with the exception of the original window sticker. Although I do know in 1996, we paid almost $37K for this truck.

Here's the detailing process it went through
    Exterior
    Full NXT Car Wash
    Full Clay Bar
    1 round: Ultimate Compound
1 coat NXT Tech Wax 2.0

    Rims
    Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner
**I didn't put tire shine on it for now**
    Interior
    Dash and trim: Ultimate Protectant
    Full Vacuum

    Steam Clean
    Windex for Auto Glass

Here's some after pics (I didn't get any before pics)

Enjoy the photos everyone, and I will have a Youtube video coming up soon of the truck!

Nice work, looks good for being over ten years old.

You should try that M20 Polymer Sealant you have, it would look good on it.

Your Suburban looks fantastic. Hard to believe it is that old, and has that many miles on the clock.

Thanks everyone for the compliments! J.A. Michaels, you're absolutely right! It looks like it has only 100K on it! However I will say that it does need a fair amount of wet color sanding to get some REALLY deep paint scratches out of there. The Ultimate Compound really took out a lot of stuff that I thought would never come out, however, it didn't get all of it I'm afraid. What would you guys recommend.

Almost a decade and a half and nearly a quarter million miles and it still looks that good? Don't sell it..... you'll kick yourself in a few months.

            Great work, it looks fantastic!!

I'm not sure if you can already tell, but I'm in the process of wiping all the glass chalk off the windows, bc I decided I'm just gonna keep it and suffer the costs of gas and maintenance.

Good for you!! I'd rather deal with gas prices and be in a big truck with a solid frame (especially if I happen to get into an accident!) You couldn't pry my big truck away from me!!! You'll get at least 300k out of that truck easy!

                Nice job on the detail!!

You will probably get more looks with an oldie like that in such nice shape. I like the plain styling of those older rectangular headlights, this is pretty much the case with the entire vehicle's styling. Simple, basic and it just works.

Being that it is in such nice shape and white, you could keep that suburban looking good for another 20 years as a daily driver.

Keep up the good work and enjoy it's uniqueness.

Well, lets say you get rid of it and get a new ride: yes, you will have far less fuel consumption but you will also have payments that you will have to meet every month and if you get a used car you will never know how the previous owner treated it and there might be damage to the engine that you simply can't see when you buy it.

That being sad, I very much have to agree with the other guys. It is a big *** truck and it is looking very nice. Now I like the way it looks but I don't like the idea of trucks since you can't go fast through corners. However, like I said, it is looking very cool and I have the outmost respect for the condition it is in.

Let me ask you this: if you were to get rid of it, what would you replace it with?

Wow! Inspiration for me to get around to compounding my Explorer. That looks really nice.

Well man, its a tough choice of what I would get to replace this truck, should I even sell it at all. Bearing in mind, it is very old and has seen its glory days, its a tough call. However, my FATHER of all people, wants buy it back from me for $3000 US or around that. Now for $3K, its not much, but it could get me something decent. I'm don't think German technology would be my first choice (no offense), mainly due to the high costs of upkeep which I really don't think I can afford at the moment. My dad can afford it, which is the reason he has a 2005 BMW 325Ci coupe (I believe the car code is E46 or something of that sort).

However, I would consider something like a 2004+ Mazda 3 4DR, 2005+ Toyota Corolla S or XRS, or a 2007+ Honda Civic SI 4DR. If I can't afford the payments on something like that (which most likely I can't with the job I have), I would refer back to the days of my first car. My first car happened to be a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT1. It was a GREAT car and I loved it to death. Sadly, death for this car came only 7 months after I bought it, thanks to an uninsured and unlicensed 16 year old driving her dads car, (I'll be making a thread on my old car in the "Break Room").

But my aim this time, is something like a 2001-2002 Mazda Millenia, 2002-2008 Acura TL Type S, or 1997-2001 Lexus ES300. Now if I was really ballsy, and decided that the way of the Germans was my way to go, then a 1992-1999 BMW 325i or M3 (E36) 4DR with a 5 speed manual, or a 1998-2002 BMW 540i w/ 6 speed manual would be great!

Now thats just the skin off the top of the cheese, in my opinion. I'm just gonna keep driving the truck for time being, even if it's the laughing stock of everyone who sees it (schoolmates, co-workers, friends, etc.). Gas may be an issue, but after all, who could complain about a FREE car?! Yep, I got it for free after my first two cars were gone. One was wrecked, the other one's engine exploded after a month !!

I'm sorry everyone, I forgot to mention in the beginning of this post, that one of the other exterior steps, was 1 coat of Deep Crystal Polish! Sorry I didn't put that. But thanks again everyone for the comments you gave me!

I forgot to post the Youtube video on my truck right after I had just finished cleaning it! The video includes, walk around, exterior and interior shots, and start up. Hope you all will enjoy!
