  • 2006 PT Cruiser Limited Edition

As some of you know, I recently lost my car in an accident when an 18 wheeler backed into it.

After weeks of searching, we finally found a replacement for it. We got a 2006 PT Cruiser Limited Edition. I have been working on it a few hours at a time trying to get it up to the level my other car was when it was totaled.

For right now, it's a work in progress, but I thought I'd share a few pics of the parts I've completed so far.

This was the driver's side floor mat when I got started:

I used APC 10:1, a carpet brush, bucket of hot water and wet/dry vac to clean up the mess. There are a few spots that wouldn't come out, but I was pleased that most of it did.

I really like the car, but hate the jerk who owns the lot we bought it from so getting his stupid sticker off the car was important. Notice the sticker below the badge on the lower left tail gate.

I used a hair dryer to heat the sticker up to soften it and the adhesive and used a plastic razor blade to scrape it off. This photo is after the sticker came off, but before the area was cleaned up.

I used Goo Gone to clean up the residue, When I was done with that, I used my 110 with a yellow polishing pad and 205 and followed that up with a coat of 26.

One of the biggest things that was annoying me was the scratches and paint transfer on the roof. I knew they were too deep to completely get rid of so my goal was to diminish them as much as possible.

I washed with ONR, then did a few passes with 105 on a burgandy cutting pad on speed 5, followed that up with 205 on a yellow polishing pad on speed 3 and topped it off with a coat of 26 on finishing pad on speed 2.

I still have a lot of work to do to have all the before and after pictures to share. It will probably be next weekend before I can get back to it, but I'll update this post with more photos when I have them.

Thanks to all of you who have been sharing your knowledge with me over the past few months. I have applied a lot of what I have learned to this project.

You'd be surprised to find out how much a body shop would charge to make that car right- several thousands of dollars. That, and (with all due respect to the original poster) PT Cruisers don't enjoy much of a wholesale book value.

That said, it doesn't take much to total one out.

At the time of the accident, book on that car was about $7500. The damages totaled up to $6100.

The body damage you see in the photo was about $3500 but there was lot of internal damage. The radiator was destroyed on impact and the starter was crushed. There was massive damage to the power steering pump and other steering components so the insurance company called it totaled.

Thanks man! It's been a test of sorts for me. This is the most intensive detail I've done so far. My back was messed up in the accident, so this has been a particularly difficult task for me.

Sorry to see the Graphite Metallic PT gone, William, but E-Blue really sparkles when done up right. It's a great color that really shows off the metallic content after a proper buffing, polishing and waxing. Nice job on taking care of the nasty bits so far!!

losing a car is hard...especially as a detailer, but when you get a new one....oh man! best feeling in the world!....well, almost as much as the feeling you get when you detail a vehicle and the customer sees it..but you get the point.

Thanks, Mike. The graphite polished up very well to the point that you could see the individual flakes in it. Look close at the accident pics and you can get an idea of what I'd been able to do with it. As sad as I am to have lost the original PT, I think the reflection of the truck's trailer on the hood is semi-amusing (pun intended )

My plan is to correct the nastiest bits first and then work to the less offensive items. The roof was so dirty that I used a whole clay bar and over half a bottle of QD just to get it clean enough to polish.
