  • Some cool current and up and coming classic car wet sanding projects

Just thought I share some pics of the'67 GT500 convertible I'm working on as well as some cars I'll be doing after I finish this one. I'll be doing all the wet sanding and buffing for this shop from now on.

Some wet sanding had already been done on this car before I arrived but I still ended up going over the whole car. I'll be heading back there later this week to start buffing.

You can see how the orange peel was in these pics...

All sanded...1000 & 2000 by hand, 3000 by DA. Pait was a few months old and very hard!

I buffed a small spot before I left with M105 and a W5000 pad before I left. Looking like glass now.

Some cars I'll be doing next...

    I love this color combo!!!

A lot of the Eleanor cars owners had the panels all molded in....looks very clean that way!

No shortage of HP in this place!!!

One of the original Christine cars fro the movie getting a face lift.

    Another Fury

Custom '67 GT500....this thing is going to be mean!!!

'59 Impala conv....another custom jb that looks amazing so far! The metal work is awesome!

I was pressed for time so sorry about the poor quality pics. I try to get more detailed with them as I get more into a grove. Not used to working off site.

Thanks man! Not a full time job though. I still plan to keep my current full time job and then just working here on the weekends as they need me. They have 3-4 cars that need to get done soon and then it will be 2-3 weekends a month.

              Thanks KC!

Polishing is pretty much the same on new paint as OEM paint. I may have to tweak my process depending on how long the paint has been sitting but it should be as follows.

              • M105 on the rotary with wool cutting pad. (I like to work at around 1200-1500 rpms)
              • M105 on the rotary with foam cutting pad
              • M205 on the rotary with foam polishing pad

At this point the cars will go back upstairs and get the final assembly work done. I will later follow up with a final finishing step likely with 3M Ultrafina on the rotary and do any touch up buffing that may be needed.

No problem...it's really no different than how you would tweak your process from working on soft Honda paint to working on rock hard Audi or Mercedes paint though.

Depending on how long the paint has had to cure I may need to use a more aggressive pad or compound. When the paint is fresh M105 and a foam cutting pad should be enough to remove 3000 grit sanding scratches (though I'd still use wool). However, when it's left to cure for a long period of time then you may need something more aggressive.

When I wet sanded my fiancees RL it had sat for about 4-6 weeks before I was able to get to it and 7 of those days was out in the hot summer sun! When I went to buff the sanding marks out of the paint with M105 and a Solo wool pad it laughed at me!

I also tried M95, Menzurna Power Gloss, and then finally busted out my 3M "Extra Cut" heavy compound which finally made some quick progress, but it left the paint heavyily swirled which required an additional buffing step to finish it off properly. In fact I worked on her car on and off over a periord of almost two weeks. There was a noticeable difference in the paint hardness from the first night when I only did the hood to later doing the rest of the car a week or so later.

Just be sure to always do a test spot so you can dial in your process before going over the whole car. For that very reason I only did the hood on her car first. If you look at the work I did on the '66 Vette I also only sanded the hood first before moving on to the rest of the car...something I picked up from Mike Phillips.

The actual paint type makes a difference too. Even though some of the cars I've wet sanded had been painted several years prior, the paint was still very soft on them.

Obviously you can also adjust speed and pressure too but I like to work below 1500rpms for various reasons, heat and safety being the main reasons.

                      Hope this helps KC!

Some more pics of the convertible...

Last minute mechanical work kept me from finishing off the complete detail but I was able to at least get it wet sanded and buffed. It was late and after 13hrs of buffing I was tired and not up to the task of taking pictures. I snapped a few and some may be slightly blurry as my tri-pod was MIA.

Hopefully on the next car I can better document the work but this one was on a tight schedule.

                            Thanks for looking,
