Newport Viper,
I don't know how water sensitive your engine is, however I was able to get a super clean engine without having to cover anyhting and without introducing any pressurized water. I simply used a few damp cloths and a wet vac removed the surface dust. Then I spayed on some of the meguiars extra all surface cleaner and used a few terry cloth towels and a brush to get off some of the tougher build up. I took me a few hours, however there was never any risk of causing damage to any of the electrical components. Then I used some Natural shine on the hoses, rocker covers, and throughout the engine bay. Mine came out great.
I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow, I am too tired to go out and take my car cover off.
Though this approach is more time consuming and doesn't work as well, there is almost no risk.
