  • Detailed Black Solara, for Re-sell.

I received this Toyota Solara to detail, and I have to say this car looked good from far far away, but up close it looked like a disaster. He had the car detailed 6 months ago from a guy on craigslist with a rotary buffer and the results were not good.

His goal was to sell the car quick so he was not interested in a full detail, only to make the car look acceptable.

I advised him to do a 3 step polish:
    Wash
    Clay
    M105
    M205
    M21 or Zaino Z2

However, since he wanted to be cost effective he wanted:
    Wash
    ZPC
    Z2

Since the goal was to re-sell the car with as little cost to him, I told him I would do it his way.

Saturday morning, I thought it was going to rain.

The car had some serious scratches as you can see.

I used the 2 bucket system for the start of the job.

The car looked good after the wash, but up close you could really see the problems:

The rear of the car made me think that this car had been repainted on possibly the front and rear bumpers. It looked like a really bad paint job up close.

    A nice scratch here:

    Car was in bad shape:

I did a test spot with the ZPC. It did an okay job.

The scratch after some Meguiars ScratchX:

The paint was removed so this was as good as it was going to get without applying new some paint.

My suspicion was confirmed on the bumper after 1 pass. This looked like a single stage job on the bumper.

I also decided to clean up his headlights since they were really bad. Here is after the sanding and some polish.

On to the after pictures: I was a little disappointed because I knew the car needed a better polish in the pre-work, however, he was happy with the correction and it's ready to put a For Sale sign on it.

    Note the level of correction:

I almost didn't want to post this because I wasn't proud of this work, but I figured it might help someone get an idea of what this combo can do.

Not every job we take on will be a full correction. I think for what the customer wanted, you hit it out of the park. Very nice job.

I agree, looks like a decent job for what was wanted.

As said before, not everyone is looking for a perfect vehicle. I think it's a homerun as long as you fulfill the customers needs. For him it is unfortunate that he went with the craigslist detailer, which probably set him (and you) 2 steps back. You may have been more pleased with the results if that other guy hadn't damaged the paint so much at first. Good job.

In our Saturday Classes we talk about managing expectations and/or understanding expectations. When a client is asking for and paying for a quick clean up it makes no sense to spend 10 hours trying to make the paint perfect.

In this case, if all the owner was looking for was a quick clean up to make the car presentable for sale, then it would seem that you delivered to a point slightly above his expectations, and that is exactly as it should be. No, the car isn't perfect but don't let that be a symbol of the quality of your work. Instead, consider that this was a quick job without a lot of effort and the car still looks better than the vast majority of cars on the road. That you took it from the mess it was to the vastly improved state it is now, with minimal time and effort, is a testament to your work. Good for you!

I think you probably exceeded the owners expectations. The car looks like it will sell quickly. Good job.

Great work on it for sure! I do have to say that to anyone outside of the detailing world, the paint probably looks like the day it did leaving the lot.
