Engine Detail done at Teammeguiars, Manila Philippines
Originally posted by Don Neither, I have a Cavalier LS Sport Coupe (AKA Z-24). It has the 2.2 DOHC. Unfortunately Chevrolet turns the power way down on 90% of their engines before they are released, so I only have 140hp/155tq. I can beat most Hondas/Acuras off the line and through most of 1st/2nd gear...but beyond that...plus I have a speed limiter at 106 mph
I do have a semi-ramair intake on it now (it's full ram in the summer) a 3" pipe connects to the bottom of the airbox, and is directly in the airstream at the other end. For the winter, I take off the lower section of tubing during the winter to prevent it from scooping up snow and getting packed closed. Right now the open end of the intake is inside the fender, protected from exposure to slush and snow, but it has plenty of cool air to feed it
Don, having basically the same motor in my SI I will comment. Unfortunatley your chevy motor was not really well engineered, I mean 2.2L and only 140 hp, come on.
On the other hand the 1.6L honda motor makes 160hp. With the HP/liter being so high, the engineers have already extracted so much power form the engine that mods will only have a minimal effect.
The open air intake that you describe in most honda motors is more throttle response and sound than it is actual HP to the wheels.
All this from someone who drives a Silly Import!!
*edit* for those of you reading this, Don and I go back a bit and are old chums. He knows I am just playing, right Don?

Actually the "ecotec" was designed very well. Look at how well a large percentage of stock parts held up when they tested to destrution when building the 800+ hp ecotec (the engine in the car that John Lingenfelter crashed in *RIP*).
The problem is "The General." The higher-ups at GM WOULDN'T LET the engineers built a high output engine. A Classic example is the Mustang vs Camaro fight in the 80's & 90's Both cars had a 5.0, but the GM had either 170 or 220 hp- (depending on if you had the TBI or TPI) The Mustang had 225hp AND 1,000 more rpms to play with. It took GM putting a 5.7 (350) inthe Camaro to make it competetive.
Obviously, someone at GM has their head where the sun don't shine. Even as big an improvement as the Cobalt SS (205 hp) is supposed to be, it still isn't enough. GM still doesn't get it, it's the Camaro vs Mustang all over again, but this time with 4 cylinder fwd cars & forced induction. And I bet that the Neon SRT does to the Cobalt, what the Mustang did to the Camaro...drive it to extinction.
*EDIT* my castrated cavalier will still take your Silly Import off the line
