  • Rejuvenation: '99 Mazda Protege and Mercedes

The Mazda was what I tackled today. When I first pulled up I almost threw up, not because I was not feeling well, but because the car was in terrible shape. I mean my truck is a 99 also and red too, even though I have polished it and kept it up, it has been in the situation as this car. My truck and this Mazda were outside a lot of the time, and some how the Mazda was worse off then my truck. Now here comes the shocker, it is single stage paint. Which would make this my first single stage paint car. The process is the same for both cars. The Mercedes was a pain because it was repainted and run through the car wash frequently.

Thanks....Yeah I have been doing some work here and there..but never took pictures...I did a new Silverado Black, just a wash, and a 2000 White Jeep Grand Cherokee wash clay wax.

I cannot tell, but is that paint transfer on the pad?! Or is the pad simply red?

The reason why there was paint transfer was because the paint was single stage. Single Stage paint essentially means that there is no clear coat. So you are basically working on the the paint. Although I think most cars in the 90's should have been clear coated. I guess the companies over seas were a little behind.

Mazda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Lexus used single stage paints off and on on red, yellow, and white (and black more rarely) up until just a few years ago for some reason.

For an experienced detailer having single stage could be a blessing, but for the average owner it probably isn't a happy day when they start to see their paint oxidizing and dulling much faster than their neighbor's car with a clear coat

Re: Rejuvenation: '99 Mazda Protege and Mercedes

I am not sure if single stage paints were used on and off randomly because since 1990 Mazda had a paint code for clearcoated red. Single stage paints are usually used on the base models for a very obvious reason: cost.

                    Great transformation on the Mazda.
                    The reflections are tremendous.
                    The Mercedes looks great also.

My point was that they used it on some cars, then went to clear, and back to single stage.

It does make sense to put it on "base" models, but how do you explain to someone that they have a "base" model Lexus?
