  • Rejuvenation: '89 Corvette

This was my task at hand today!!! Through the rough patches, I think it turned out great!! This was my first time using the new G110 backing plate. I was excited going in to the detail, since I was going to use the new backing plate. Only to be very disappointed. I finished washing the car, and went to polishing, no clay bar needed, although I should have just in case. Anyways I was using M105, and found it very hard to wipe off. I knew I had not dry buffed, and I worked it in as usual. So I proceeded to call Meguiars Customer Care Center. Rick picked up the phone and told me to work a smaller section and only do a few passes, and start over. This did help, but I thought it took too much time, and wasted a lot of product. So I whipped out the Ultimate Compound, and used it by HAND!! It was not that bad, and the Ultimate Compound helped a lot for the oxidation. I did two coats of that, and the owner was satisfied. But the trouble spots were the bumpers, which I need help on what to use. Anyways, here are the pictures!! Enjoy!!

Great Job! The cluster on that car is hideous though haha

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

        I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
        Remove swirls my friends.

              Nice work!!!

The bumpers are called "True Flex" and they are painted with a flex additive in the paint, the only fix would be wetsanding. I don't think your going to improve them much unless your really experienced in wetsanding, I don't think I would even try it myself on those.
Polish the heck or of them and that's about all you can do...

That's about the brightest display I have seen in a long time, did he send it in for refurbishing?

Absolutely correct. Unlike the later SMC (Sheet Metal Compound) on the C5's and C6's, the C4's (your model) has fiberglass compound bumpers painted with a very high amount of flex additive in the paint. This prevents cracking or distortion during the inherent movement and flexing of such material.

You need to be careful!! Heavy compounds with "cutting" pads and high power machines like a Flex or rotary can literally "twist" the paint. There's a thread floating around of a similar instance with a BMW. Looks like you got a good deal corrected on the trunk lid (different underlying material) but a high degree of orange peel and lack of luster remain on the bumper. If a G110 with M105 at speed 6 doesn't do it then your remaining options are all hazardous...wetsanding, more powerful machine, or multiple passes. Unless you have a PDG (Paint Depth Gauge) to insure you're working with lots of clearcoat I don't know that I'd wetsand it. Might just be something the owner has to live with...

                Great job, by the way!!
