  • 1st detail with g110 and swirlx

Used a g110 for the first time on my daily swirl bucket. I am very impressed with the g110 and the products I used however my technique and knowledge did not allow me to get the kinds of correction I had hoped. I believe I may have gotten about 85% correction, however the vehicle does look a lot better than previously. Having learned to wash and care for the vehicle through this site along with countless others I used a large amount of products from different vendors. Here is my process which I will need to tune and improve.

My hat goes off to those of you who do this for a living, this was more work than I realized before I started.

About 17 hours total (I'm slow)

    Interior:

Vaccuumed, Gold Class Dash and Trim Foam, GC Leather Cleaner and Conditioner

    Exterior:

Wheels: LA's totally amazing (10:1) mixed with DC soap (20:1) and water
Pre-Wash (panels misted): ONR QD mixed with DG 521
Wash and Clay: ONR , clayed with Megs Clay kit

    Examined paint:

    More swirls:

Decided to go with the g110 and a LC 5.5" white polishin pad. Picked a test spot with SwirlX for two passes at speed 5.

I knew this was the best to my ability so I proceeded with the rest of the vehicle. While it looks a lot better I hope to improve my process and technique.

    After polishing:

Glaze: Megs #7 (just wanted to try it, heard good things)
Wax: P21s 100%, DG AquaWax as 24 hour wipe down
Seals (Trunk, Doors, Windows): Megs #40
    Trim: Megs Trim Detailer
Wheels: 3M Performance Finish Synthethic Wax (super easy to use)
    Tires: Megs NXT Insane Shine

    Results:

    Reflection Shots-

    Vehicle-

That is all any pointers are welcome thanks for viewing.

You actually did a great job, especially if this was your first time using this tool.

As you pointed out, it can take a long time from start to finish depending upon how bad of condition the car is in to start with and it looks like it had plenty of swirls.

    Questions:

    1. Would you agree the swirl removal step took the most time as far as the paint work goes?

    2. How big of an area did you work at one time when doing the swirl removal step?

    3. What Speed Setting did you use?

You're faster than me! And you're absolutely right: polishing involves more and longer work than one realizes. My hat too is off to the pros who are able to accomplish in 12 hours what takes me 24-30.

Great effort. You should feel real good about what you have accomplished.

        Thanks!

I would agree that the swirl removal took about 12-13 hours not counting the lunch break. I really tried to keep the area to no larger than 2x2 and no smaller than 1x1. Both passes were done on speed 5-6. I learned more about the g110 and polishing as I went along (pressure, position on the paint and how the product responded at given times during the passes)

Honestly, it was great to see the progress as I was working. I kept reminding myself that it was process and not about speed. Having my Zune playing every song I own helped as well with the polishing.

This forum's Hot Topics really helped with every aspect. The information for pad cleaning while working was very beneficial as well.

I was really set on 100% correction so I tried to do the two passes with swirl x and then finish out with a single pass using Optimum polish. This only did nothing but point out my lack of skill as the panel looked worse than with just the two passes. More than likely I did not work that product correctly with my pad choice and working time.

when you first started riding a bike, could you do it with no hands? I and everyone else knows it takes a long time to get it tuned in just right, I think we are all learning every day, even Nick is learning something new every day probably.

I hear ya. Its easy to think otherwise. Before deciding to purchase the DA I checked around regularly on pricing to get the swirls removed. They were all over the board with some telling me 2 hours and others 2 days. Glad I chose to do it myself can't wait to try on a different car with different issues.

Congrats on the great job you did. The Benz looks great. Huge improvement.

Each time you use the G110 and refine your technique your time will become shorter and shorter to do the complete detail.

                Once again great work.

                  SWEET! That came out great.

I'm going to have to give those 5.5 inch pads a try.

nice work, you have got fantastic results, esp considering most merc paint jobs are hard as nails
