  • 2005 Honda Civic Exterior

Hey Guys, heres a Civic a friend of mine brought me that needed some serious TLC. I wasnt able to get out a few scratches in the clear coat as I think they may have been too deep. unfortunately I dont have a UV lense and all I used was my point and shoot camera. Hopefully you can give me a critique.
No Chip repair was done and the car had some forming rust spots under the paint (small).

    Materials used:

    Megs Mirror Glaze 105 Polish
Meg Yellow Carnuba wax (not sure of the number)
    Megs Swirl remover 2.0
    Meguiars Claybar Kit
    Porter Cable 7424
Lake country CCS Yellow Pad for Trunk and Hood areas
Lake Country CCS Orange pad for doors and lower panels
    Megs Gold Class Car wash
    Microfibre Wash Mits (2)

Now this is after the Buffing and polishing....

    A Happy Owner...

Where are the rust spots? Certainly would be good if you could sand off the rust and dab a little touchup paint in.

Thanks guys!!! There wasnt any rust onywhere but there were some deeper scratches I couldnt get out and I was wondering how I would do that. The 105 didnt really do the job and Im thinking I may have to learn how to wet sand if I start doing this professionally.

Sorry shoulda clarified...there were paint spots bubbling on the hood where the rust was forming (really small).

Thanks guys for the nice compliments. I posted another reply with a pic of the trunk with the deeper scratches on the trunk. Thought it would go through fast but guess not. Should be on soon.

Just a question, would a job like this (exterior only) cost a pretty penny to be done by a professional? reason Im asking is that I am planning to do this part time as my own business and I have done other cars just no pics.

                    Re: 2005 Honda Civic Exterior

The deeper scratches are called RIDS Random Isolated Deeper Scratches and they show up easily to your eyes after you remove all the shallow scratches surrounding them.

Before you go down the road of sanding them out, keep in mind a couple of things,

First, if this is a daily driver, then it's usually not a good idea to put a show car finish on a daily driver as it will tend to just get scratched and swirled again in the future.

In fact, how did it get all the damage it has already? Whatever caused the deeper scratches and the neglected in the first place, has this changed?

Second, the factory paint is thin and sanding out deeper scratches could cause you to sand and buff too far and you could go through the clear and expose the color coat.

Again, if this is a daily driver, you're probably better off living with what you can achieve by what you've already done.

When detailing for a business, don't over promise. Keep in mind your customer and their needs. If they want a show car finish on a daily driver that's already thrashed and neglected that's a pretty good sign they're not a good candidate for a show car finish in the first place.

Balance the service you offer to the reality of how the car is used. Also you don't want to be creating show car finishes if your only charging for daily driver type detailing.

Besides all that, you're results look very good and the owner should be very happy with your work.

Thanks Mike, Yes this was a daily driver and I did mention to this person theres a very good change it will not come out and attempting to do so will damage the paint.

its true, people who just do the daily driving dont really want to pay for showcar finishes. They want a quick buff and go and pay the least they can...the car enthusiasts are the one who will pay for a great job. The costomer in this case was excited when he saw the results and loved it. Im trying to start to get referrals from PPL to increase my business.

Tell 'em to quit using the trunk as a table, lol. The car looks 100% better than it did!
