  • My Quickie Buff on my PT:

    Hey Everyone,

I just figured I would post my little quickie buff job I did a couple weeks ago on my PT. Its been about a year since the new candy tangerine paint, and flames, and it had some light swirls that needed a bit of attention, so I broke out my old school Makita, and wool pad, and went to it. All together I spent about 10 hours including masking time to get it to where I wanted it.

I started by washing it down with dish washing liquid, and warm water. The reason for this is, I usually like to use the high PH balance to remove any wax, or other chemicals from the paint surface prior to Detailing, which I know may sound kind of funny, but to me, it just feels good to know I have a clean fresh surface to work with.

I also know that I could probably get as good, or better results by using Foam Pads, but for some reason I am still attached to my trusty old Makita, and wool pad. I think its just cause I have been doing it so long that way, that it feels more natural to me!

On the wheels, and chrome,I like to use Jewler's White Rouge, which is the same stuff used to buff out Billit, and aluminum wheels, and tanker trucks to that nice high gloss chrome like appearance. I find that if you use the rouge with a powerball, and drill, I can get all of the microscratching out of my old stock chrome wheels, and bring them to a nice high gloss finish that I just can't achieve with regular metal polish.

And finally, I used to use Meguiar's Medallian back in the day as a base under Paint Sealant to pull a little more depth, and gloss off the paint, but since its no longer in production, I am subsituting it at the moment with Blackfire Ivory Carnuba which is a bit pricey, but does a good job to make the color on my ride pop.

Anyways, here was my Chemical rundown.

    1 Dishwashing Liquid
    2. #2 Fine Cut
    3. #7 Show Car Glaze
    4. Blackfire "Midnight Sun" Ivory Carnuba
    5. #28 Synthetic Sealant
    6. Jewler's White Rouge
    7. Endurance Tire Gel

And here are the results: "Click on the pic to view"

Surprisingly, she still don't look too bad for 6 years, and 54,000 miles later. She is still a work in progress, but coming along a little at a time!

Anyways, I thank you very much for checking out my ride, and letting me share some of my old, and antiquated Detailing ideas with yall!

    Take it easy!

    Nice PT Cruiser Candyman.

I Like that color, our Neon is Orange Blast and fun to look at when it's clean.

    Good show

Definitely one of the cleanest PT's I've seen. Very nice job.

We had a 2001 LIMITED (By we, I mean my father) since they first came out and just sold it about a year ago. Neat car, and definitely has a cult following.

        Hello Everyone,

I apologize for no pictures. I had an issue with a photo I uploaded twice by accident so I am re-doing my gallery. With that said, lets try this again.

        Here are my results.

And no worries Mr. Phillips, these photo's will not wind up as red x's, I promise!

        Take er easy

you went from #2 on a wool pad straight to #7? that would normally leave hazing and holograms which would just be hidden by #7...... but maybe chrysler paint is different i dont know....

                Hey their Everyone,

I thank you for checking out my ride, and great feedback! I big time appreciate it!

                BenHui86,

Yes sir, normally I would go from #2, to #9 to #7. Only reason I manage to pull it off is with a super ultra light touch on the buffer, and 14 thick coats of a super hard aftermarket urethane clear when I re-did the paint last year. But yeah, very, very light pressure and you can go straight to #7 on occasion. So far, so good, but its only a once in a while thing, and for the most part one of those "Do not try this at home" kind of things! I also find it helps if I apply #7 at high speed as well.

                Again, thank you everyone!

Did you really use dishwashing liquid?
That is a big No NO as many people have said and know.
It strips wax and can dry out the paint.

The occasional use of dish soap (like maybe once a year or so) won't do any real harm and he did say he used it to intentionally strip the existing wax.

Having said that, though, there really isn't a need to do this as any paint cleaner, especially when used with a wool pad on a rotary, will strip wax almost instantly. Hey, if you're removing below surface defects, you're definitely removing wax!!

Looks good Candyman..... and I have an email from you that I need to respond to. Sort of a busy Monday today, sorry.
