  • 1988 BMW M5 Black Finished

Finally finished this project for the dealer!

The paint was very thin and single stage, so extra care had to be used. And, I managed to burn through an edge on the lower front fender. We knew the car had been compounded over its' 20 year life and tried to be as careful as possible.

For products, I used Meguiar's #83 where there was some correction needed, followed by Meguiar's Color X for depth and further surface enhancement.

Finally, I applied a heavy coat of Meguiar's #26 with a pc and let it dry completely. THEN, I power washed the car to remove excess product from body seams, etc. While the car was wet, I removed the 26 with new mf towels. The dampness on top of the 26 acted like a quick detailer so there was no towel hazing.

    Before sample of paint:

    AFTER'S:

While the car is not Concour's level, it's very nice for a 20 year old vehicle with 100,000 miles. It's going into the dealer's collection of M Series.

Don't worry, someday you will get something other than a black BMW to do.

how much care is required when the paint is at a single stage? - would you bother repaiting or not?
Oh and by the way nice job~

Because the paint was so thin, aggressive products and pads were not used. I paint gauged the car prior to starting and evaluated where the thinnest areas were. Even taking care, I managed to burn the paint on the lower edge of the front fender. Plus, there were 2 other burn areas from a previous detail that I flat stayed away from.

                      My process was:

                      Meg's 83 with the yellow So1o pad
Meg's ColorX with the yellow So1o pad (kept 3 pads in rotation: use-wash-dry so they wouldn't load up)
Meg's #26 applied with a pc and the 9006 pad

Let the #26 dry to a haze (approx. 2 hours)

Power wash with plain water to remove excess product from body seams.

Dry/remove #26 with new mf towels.

So you pressure washed it before taking off the wax, never heard of that. Good idea for the seams. I'll have to try that.
                          Looks great!

Way to go! Looks better then it did back in '88. I wonder how some NXT/M21 would've looked instead of the M26. Either way it looks amazing!
