  • 1987 Ferrari Testarossa

I had detailed this particular Ferrari about 8 months ago. Since then it was involved in an accident that required some touch up work. Unfortunately while they redid the rear quater panel they also took a hand at filling in some paint chips and sanding them level.

I was unsure what they used to sand the touch up dots, but it looked like razor scratches on the clear coat.

    Process Outline (quick)

Wash with Dodo Juice "Born to be Mild" car soap, two buckets
Clay with Meguiars' "Red" clay using Last Touch 1:1 for lubricant
Blow dry and blot with a waffle weave.
P21s Wheel Gel on rims, aggitated with a Swissvax wheel brush
P21s Wheel Gel on inner rims, aggitated with an EZDetail brush
Meguiars APC 7:1 on wheel compartments and tires

    Paint Correction:

Fix paint sanding scratches with Meguiars Unigrit 2000/2500/3000, wet
Compound entire Ferrari with Meguiars M105 on a Meguiars So1o Wool Pad at 1800 RPMS via Makita Rotary x 2-3
Polish entire Ferrari with Meguiars M83 DAC/P on a Meguiars Diamond
    Cut So1o Pad at 1500 -> 1200 RPM x 1
Polish entire Ferrari with Meguiars M80 "Speed Glaze" on a Meguiars 8006 Polishing Pad on a G100.

    LSP/Dressing/ECT

Dodo Juice "Lime Prime Lite" via hand, soft german foam pad
Dodo Juice "SuperNatural" x 2 coats by hand using Meguiars Gold Class applicatior
Meguiars Hyperdressing 3:1 on wheel arches
Meguiars Hotshine Tire dressing x 2
    Jeff Werkstatt Prime on rims
Meguiars NXT Metal Polysh on exhaust tips and wheel knock off hubs
Meguiars NXT Window Cleaner on windows

    Okay some pictures...

The first picture shows one of the several spots of concern in the paint. The deep "swirl" marks are actually sanding marks that ran very deep into the paint. Trying to compound these out would remove a large amout of paint so I choose the slow and steady process of wetsanding. Inital paint thickness was in the 5.3-5.5 mil range over the panel.

Here is the same area after sanding with 2000/2500/3000 grit and polishing out with several steps... There is still a slight haze in the paint from the "DAC/P" and the meduim soft paint. After the aggressive correction the paint was showing 5.2-5.3 mils.

The center of the trunk also had these deep scratches around the emblem. When I took this picture I had already been sanding with 2000 grit (up and down) but you can see the deeper scratches running in great frequency across the width of the panel.

Flattened down more and finished sanding with 3000 grit. It was no perfect as I had already taken 2/10's of a mil off and did not want to penetrate the surrounding original paint any further.

    After polishing out.

Working M80 "Speed Glaze" into the paint until it "clears"

Sparringly applying the "Lime Prime Lite" glaze and precleaner

Two thin coats of Dodo Juice SuperNatural applied and left to cure.

Cloud cover made getting some of the sun shots difficult (luckily it would clear up at the very end)

How did the finish get so trashed in the first place?

Hopefully you educated the owner on how to take care of it from here on out or signed him up for a maintenance program.

      Nice work!

        Nice work!

I had detailed it before... The car was in an accident and the body shop that fixed it thought that they would be nice and fill in some paint chips and sand them level with rocks...

The entire car had some nasty rotary trails (probably buffed with a dirty wool pad) to boot...

The car took 2 days (19 hours) to get right..

Great work Todd! The car looks amazing!

Anyone else get the Miami Vice theme music in their heads right away? That was a 1986 Testarossa but close enough for me.

That car brings back all the cool Miami Vice memories as a teenager. The Testarossa was "the" car back then. Beautiful restoration on the car.
