  • Well, I did it... 04 F150

After a few weeks of grumbling about how the paint on my $1200 beater-in-transformation Cherokee had less swirls than my dad's 2004 F150, I finally broke out the rotary. This is the first time I've worked on anything with a five-digit Blue Book, so please be kind. I wasn't looking to perfect everything... Just get it to a level that I and my (non-paying) customer could live with. And yes, I know the wheels and especially the centers are terrible. They need some TLC that I'm just not qualified or willing to provide, so I left them alone save for a good washing. He should just get new ones anyway... haha

This one had some fairly heavy cobwebbing/swirls, and some coal dust embedded in the paint. The previous owner lived way out in the middle of nowhere, and most of the roads up there are gravel... Really did a job on the finish. There were also some ancillary scratches. I took out what I could, and tried to at least minimize the rest.

I'll also give a link to my flickr, which has some shots of an impromptu photoshoot I did at a local park... I timed it so that I finished just as the light was getting sweet around here and wanted an excuse to take the truck for a ride. I'm just gonna upload all the photos there. They haven't been photoshopped at all yet, so some of the backgrounds are less than stellar. No truck should have a tree growing out of the hood.

    Problems
Step 1: Gold Class car wash, dryer sheet bug removal
Step 2: Mild Clay Bar + QD
    Step 3: #82 Swirl-Free Polish, Rotary at 5/6, 3M Perfect-It convoluted polishing pad
Step 4: Step 2 all over again, with a little more passion this time
Step 5: #7 Glaze (Probably not necessary, but I had time to kill before the light got nice)
Step 6: #26 Hi-Tech Yellow wax x2, applied by hand
Step 7: Hot Shine Tire Foam, Random Blue Dressing I borrowed from work

Any questions, comments, complaints, or suggestions, please fire away.

    After washing, bug removal:

    After two passes with #82:

After #7 and #26... My dad being amazed by the depth and shine:

It's not perfect, but much improved:

And last but not least, a teaser from when I took it to the park:

Larger versions of these, and about 40 more pics of the truck are up at:

    Thanks, everybody!

Great work, much better than before. Try using No 80 instead of 82, i think it would be a greater result.

That was actually the plan, but my local paint shop was out of #80 when I got there... And it started raining about two hours after I made my initial post. Had I waited, I'd have been stuck for 2 or 3 days waiting for the weather to clear, at which point I'd be back at work again, so those couple days would have turned into a week or three.

#82 has kind of been my default product for a while now. I got two quart bottles for free from a buddy of mine, so I'm pretty comfortable with how it cuts and breaks down. I used the first bottle cleaning up my vehicles (as well as anything else made out of painted metal I could find in my house), and this truck used the last little bit and an ounce or so out of the second bottle. I'd rather have to hit the truck two or three times with #82 than go something heavier and burn or swirl it at this point... Not to mention it's a lot easier on the wallet to use what you got when you're not being compensated besides a pack of cigarettes and some fried chicken.

Thanks for the advice, though. I've got two more cars coming up that are in similar shape, so I'll definitely invest in some #80.

Hahaha, right on Joe94XJ. Or you can buy a cutting pad from CCS yellow or orange if you want to stick with 82. Fried chicken here we come...

Haha... Had he sprung for beer instead I'd have driven across town and got the 80. Still turned out okay, though. Too bad it's rained most of the day today or I'd have taken more pictures. Starting to storm again now and I'm halfway through a brake job... Drums, at that!

Haha, thanks. It's got the hind end up in the air right now and the wheels off. Storming like heck out there, and I was in the middle of doing the brake shoes. Hopefully it passes before too long. Couple more bad storms and my rockers will have disintegrated entirely. We should get a group of MOL Jeepers together and do a photoshoot or a ride.

Looking at the truck again today, I found a few scratches I could probably knock out with ScratchX, so there'll probably be more pictures later on this week as I pull out some of the bigger defects that are left.
