  • My Engine Detail

Well, I didn't have a lot of time so I just did it quick and lazy the entire job took about 30 minutes (including about 15 minutes of letting the HyperDressing sit), so it was actually about 15 minutes of actual work (if you want to call it work).

Sorry no before shots, but the engine wasn't horrible, but kind of what you can expect after about 20k miles and no engine care at all.

Looks good, but sounds like it was too easy.

        Shhhhhhh!!!

When I was done (I did it after work), I left my wife with our two small kids and had a few cold ones. After a few more cold ones, she same outside and saw the results and said...

YOU WORK TOO HARD, BUT IT'S SO SWEET OF YOU!

Hey Fitty do you mind going over exactly what you did and which products you used? I would like to try an engine detail sometime but I would prefer an easy way to do it. Your method sounds right up my alley - Quick & Easy!

For instance, did you use any brushes or other tools or did you simply spray the products on, let them sit, rinse with a hose, and dry? I'm a total noob when it comes to the engine bay.

                Kooz,

It was so simple I'm almost embarrassed.

First off, I took a lot of information from guys here that do engine detail all the time. Took the easiest parts and made up my own. I took a lot of tips from Derrick in particular who posts some of the best detail job (IMHO) that this site has to offer.

Okay... first thing was that I did NOT cover anything (again this I took from Derrick). Basically the consensus on the site was that if your car is fairly new you probably don't need to cover anything. So here it is in detail.

                1. I first sprayed the car down using my garden hose and a typical spray attachment. I did not use full pressure but enough pressure to dislodge any loose particles. (I also sprayed both front quarter panels to ensure no grease or other cleaner got on them).

                2. Next I sprayed APC, diluted 10:1 throughout the entire engine. Like you, I'm also a noob at engine detailing so I figured with the APC diluted in this way I stood the smallest chance of doing damage.

                3. I let the APC sit for about a minute and using a very flexible brush (that I normally use on my wheels - I'll post a picture later), I agitate only those areas where there was noticeble buildup (ie: around the oil dipstick - orange knob in picture). The brush I use is pretty soft bristled as well. So I did minimal agitation in those heavy spots and the APC really seemed to work well (now keep in mind my engine wasn't too nasty to begin with, otherwise I would have probably opted for something strong - like the super degreaser).

                4. After the minimal agitation, I rinsed. Again, nothing crazy but enough to wash the APC off.

                5. Next I sprayed the HyperDressing (liberally) focusing on hoses and plastics (but I have to admit I wasn't target shooting). I got a lot everywhere. I closed the hood and let the car marinade for about 15 minutes.

                6. I opened her up and really QUICKLY went over the hoses and plastics with a foam paint brush. When I say quickly... I mean I did it all in about a minute. I also went over "other' areas where I got HD and just quickly wiped them down with a rag.

I might be making it sound like more work than it was... but truly it was a joke.

                  Re: My Engine Detail

Hmm...very interesting. I too have read a lot from Derrick about this. You used APC, not APC+? I thought APC was primarily for interiors whereas APC+ was for engines, tires, wheel wells, etc. Am I wrong on that one? I have no problem getting an ADS order together but all I need are HD and APC? And a brush too.

The engine compartments on both my cars are also not that bad at all, I just want to see if I can make them look great. Why? Because I'm apparently car crazy and need to add more steps to my detailing process!

You are 100% right and I 100% used the wrong stuff! LOL

I should have used APC+ not APC... but the point for me was to use something gentle and I suppose I accomplished that goal. LOL

Thanks so much for all the great advice! I will put an ADS order together soon.

And BTW - nice job on the engine detail!

Just used my apc+ today for the first time. I used it on my dash, door panels, and back door windows, diluted 10:1. Am I not supossed to use the apc+ for interiors and instead use the regular apc?? I am confused now.

Just trying to figure out if I used the wrong stuff?
