  • orionredwing Detailed: 2000 VW Beetle GLX Turbo

I am new to detailing. My background is 10+ years using a simple Meguiar's Glaze & Wax routine. I honestly thought that was good, because nobody I knew even detailed to that level. Little did I expect how the online community would open up a whole new world, and redefine the definition of 'detailing' to me. You can imagine if my friends were impressed at my simple routine before, they flat out call me crazy now. Wonder how many of you guys received the same remarks?

I have to say that as a first time machine user, the Flex was not the daunting obstacle that I feared. After 45 mins on spd 3-4 to get the hang of it, I did the rest on spd 5 & 6. I learned to control the 'runaway' and had to stop every hour or so because the 'vibration' would numb my wrists and elbows - these are the 2 words you hear reviewed about the Flex most often.

My fiancee's yellow beetle has NEVER been detailed in the past 8 years. The entire car was swirled up (see tail light pics). It was so much work removing swirls, but was fun seeing the transformation on her Herbie.

In terms of product selection, I selected Meguiar's NXT 2.0 over my Poorboy's EX-P. This is because NXT 2.0 was SO easy to remove, I wouldn't feel lazy reapplying it for her later. I also did a carnauba topper test, but surprisingly, I liked it better w/o a topper. Maybe because her car was yellow.

Note: Since you guys are enthusiasts, I won't be able to slide one past ya. Yes, her door panel was discolored because of a re-paint job, hehe. Sorry the pics are not better; I have a really crappy camera.

Flex XC3401VRG on spd 5 (6 for spot areas)
    Clear Kote Clay & Lube
Menzerna Intensive Polish (LC orange pad)
Menzerna Final Polish II (LC white pad)
    Menzerna Final Tough Glaze
    Meguiar’s NXT 2.0 (2 coats, 24 hrs apart)
Poorboy’s World Wheel Sealant (2 coats, 24 hrs apart)
    Meguiar’s Rich Leather Conditioner
    303 Aerospace Protectant
    Stoner’s Invisible Glass

Total Time: 20 hrs (ouch - hopefully less next time)

great job! Yeah my neighbors are always amazed at the length I go to on my cars, of course having my mobile van in my driveway all of the time they kind of expect it

Very nice job. I've used Menzerna Polishes for over a year until I got a sample of #105. It took the place of SIP,IP, and 106FF. You really need to try it out.

Love the finish you got there.

      How do you like NXT2.0?

You'll get the hang out of it, next time you won't last 20hrs

Great job on the swirl removal! Bummer about that door mismatch - too bad more body shops don't do a better job than that. I was at a car show a year ago and one of the cars had yellow paint from the factory but the owner had a custom rear end put on the car and several months later a custom rear hatch window cover put on - the back of the car ended up with three different shades of yellow!

As for numb hands from using the Flex, that was my experience as well and it was bad. I don't get that from my PC7424 or Makita rotary so I'll be happily sticking with those.

Bummer about the mismatched color from the body shop. Otherwise the beetle looks great. You did a excellant job. It looks great. Hope the gilfriend was happy.

Thanks for the positive feedback! It was a great learning experience. My fiancee was super happy, as her yellow Herbie got a lot of positive comments from her female co-workers and friends. It's definitely a chic's car

I like the new NXT 2.0 a lot. I can't believe how smoothly it applied, and how effortless it was to remove after I let it dry to a haze. I think I was surprised because other products I tried were also classified as 'easy to remove', and they were...but NXT 2.0 was noticeably more effortless. To be fair, I know applying with a buffer allows you to spread the product more thinly, but I also noticed the same ease of removal when I applied by hand on the previous detail.

I also did a spot test with a #26 topper on half the hood, and liked it better without. Difference was very slight (couldn't show in a pic I took), but #26 made the car warmer, slightly darker, and silkier to the touch, whereas NXT 2.0 was more reflective, cooler, and was very light to the touch. I thought the difference in textures (silky vs light) was very cool.

In the end, I will only use NXT 2.0 on my fiancee's car w/o a topper, as the ease of application will be a good motivator for re-applying NXT 2.0 on her car in 2-3 months Otherwise, it's easy to get lazy, hehe.

I beg to differ. Beetles can be for guys just as much as for girls. Just a common stereotype for those types of cars.

Yups, some beetles in different colors or different setups look nice. I've browsed the beetle forums for her, and there are some nice looking cars that are great for guys/gals.

But for her car, it definitely has a more feminine feel, which was what I meant. I always get funny looks or a big grin from others when I drive her yellow bug...ironically, usually from girls.
