That's a nice looking car and thanks for sharing, the technology that goes into these things amazes me and makes me think where will we be in another 20 years, hopefully there will still be a need to wax cars and protect paint or i don't know what I'm going to do

          Re: Weird 7 series

The Hydrogen 7 sounds like an ordinary V12 BMW, but a bit quieter and slower - it has only 260 hp. Nothing special - I traveled in one while visiting the Frankfurt Show, as BMW pushing this to high heaven.

And this is definitely NOT the technology of the future. Well-to-wheel efficiency? Come on!

BMW is manufacturing the first series of hydrogen fueled cars. They're not as green as they seem. For a start, they're incredibly thirsty -- and they will put more strain on the environment than a heavy diesel truck.

            Re: Weird 7 series

Fundamentally, this is a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) similar to one that runs on CNG or propane. BMW's had this out for at least 7 years, but not in general consumer hands (they have a research facility in Oxnard or Santa Barbara).

BTU efficiency of H2 is not very high, so both power and distance are highly compromised, hence the V12 only producing 260 hp. I don't recall if this is correct, but it sounds reasonable.

It was designed as a possible interim step to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCV) to placate CARB and stimulate gov't investment into hydrogen fuel stations... where not much has progressed. It's too bad that Sacramento seems more intent on fighting the Feds on inane "green house gas" regulations instead of leaving that to the EPA and focusing on support for new technologies that would bring investment into the state and begin to solve some of the major hurdles in moving away from dino-juice.

thats really cool, but only 260hp? I wanna ride that wave, but I need more power than that.

Came back from the Memorial Day weekend and finally got around to reading this thread and started getting all excited!

Then clicked the link below and read the article, if you want more background information on this concept of creating a hydrogen powered car then definitely click the link below and read the article.

There is no intention to put this or any other hydrogen-fueled car into production yet. The point of the exercise is to gather experience with a hydrogen car in the real world.

At this moment, the production of hydrogen as a motor fuel typically begins with a petroleum resource such as natural gas and then requires massive amounts of electricity, which is often produced by burning coal. So looking at the entire energy cycle, it's an environmental bust

Here's the important part as all new ideas have to start somewhere...

BMW fully acknowledges its Hydrogen 7 makes no commercial sense in the near term. But the project is not about replacing gasoline any time soon. It is instead intended to start a dialog, to offer a vision of the future, to demonstrate some possibilities, to encourage development of an infrastructure, and to expand our knowledge about hydrogen as a fuel for vehicles that are otherwise just like what we're used to.

Hats off to BMW and thank you Joe for posting this.

                    Re: Weird 7 series

We had the Hydrogen 7 series at the dealer here for 1 day. It is making a tour you can say. BMW has invited a few different high profile people to trest drive the car. What goes into holding the hydrogen alone is WOW.

I didn't know hydrogen vehicles are available in states.
