OK - so I've actually been here reading, and reading, and reading. I've searched a lot of threads, learned a lot of stuff (and bought a lot of Meguiar's product).
Here's my initial results:

When I started, the car was dull and needed attention. I had the obvious fine spider scratches everywhere. There were also some other slightly deeper scratches. The worst problem was hard water etching on the hood and roof.
I used ColorX and ScratchX, but they weren't going to fix the hard water etching this century. I ordered M80 and M83 online and used them all over the car.
My best results were with the following procedure:
Wash car
Clay bar car with Meguiar's Quick Detail Spray
M83 entire car with random orbital buffer (Cheap Craftsman brand - need a PCnext)
Repeat process with M80
Used another brand of even finer polish (sorry Meguiar's - it's what I had)
Wax with NXT.
Results are pretty good, but I think I'll redo the whole process after buying a PC just to get that last 1-2% of possible shine.
Thanks for all the posts that preceded me. They were immensely helpful.
Before using the 83 and 80, I had also used the 3-step process (DC1,DC2,DC3). I also used M7 and M9. I used ColorX and ScratchX. I dressed the wheels with Meguiar's (purple stuff - don't know the name without looking).
Thanks again everyone.
