  • My first 'serious' detail.

I've done basic details many times before but only ever by hand and with your off the shelf products. It's a little more difficult to get many of the Mirror Glaze products here in Australia. I decided to use my wifes '91 white Ford Laser at a test before attacking my Holden Calais in Panther Mica (black/green). I finally ordered three of the 6.5" Lake Country (Wolfgang) pads and they are fantastic to say the least. It also gave me a chance to finally use the GMC ROS150M orbital that my wife bought me for Christmas.

    The process was
    1; Wash
2: Clayed using 3M and Meguiars NXT speed detailer for lubricant.
3: Meguiars #80 'Speed Glaze' on an Orange LC pad
4: Meguiars #9 'Swirl Remover 2.0' on a white LC pad
5: Meguiars Deep Crystal pure polish on grey LC pad.
6: Meguiars Wet-look Polymer sealant applied by hand on Megs yellow applicator pads.

Before I started the paint wasn't in a bad condition but was pretty dull, not much reflection and pretty rough. After the whole process I backed the car into the sun and was greeted by a blinding white glow. Even for a 16 year old white car with single stage paint you have to admit the reflections are pretty good. All up an 8 hour detailing job including a lunch break and a coffee here and there.

Eventually I'd like to replace the Deep Crystal polish with #7 Show car glaze and the Polymer sealant with #21 synthetic sealant and a topper like #26 Hi tech Yellow wax paste, but as with everyone money is a bit of an issue. Will post the Calais in the next week or so once it's done. That will be the true test. I promise to get some better photos next time too.

How was it working with the 3M clay? Was it easy to work with? That is the Blue clay right?

Yes, the 3M clay is the blue one. I think it's called" Perfect It". 200gram bar and I got it for a bargain on ebay. I've used the old Meguiars one which was also very good but I think it was only an 80gram bar. I broke the 3M one in half and kept the other half stored so hopefully I'll get twice as much use out of it. The Meguiars bar did seem a little softer and easier to fold whereas the 3M is a bit harder and a little more brittle. The results are pretty much the same though.

After doing the car with #80, the orange LC pad was totally white but I think that was more the #80 that made it white, but it washed out so easily. Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on the process I used as I plan on using the exact same process on my own car in the next weekend or so and It's metalic black/green with a few swirls.
