  • "You Father's Oldsmobile"... no...Really!!!

I've been lurking around the Megs site for several years, but have only posted a few times. However, I had to "show off" on this one. We found this car in an estate sale, sitting in a garage, covered with stuff (you know, dust, dirt, boxes, everything but a cover). It had not been run in 10 years but only had 24K on the clock. We brought it home, cleaned the gas tank, installed a new fuel filter, cleaned the carburetor (y'all remember those, right?), changed the oil and filter, poured some gas in and fired it up. Believe me when I say the not even the noisy Oldsmobile valve train made even a "tap". We've since added new tires, brakes, transmission flush and filter, and a new A/C compressor. We've put another 7K miles on it with no problems.

Now, to the paint, it has been raining here in Southeast Texas for what seems like a month and I was getting a little stir-crazy being couped up in the house. So, I decided to take PC in hand and go after the Olds. Remember that this paint is 22+ years old and it is the factory paint complete with factory 'orange peel' (single stage). Anyway, see for yourself. By the way, the interior looks like it is brand new. I had forgotten how the luxo-boats just float down the road.

This is a hobby for me, I'm by no means a pro, but I'm pretty pround of this one.

    Nice find!

What is the exact year and model just in-case some of our members are not Oldsmobile Aficionados?

It's a 1985 Olds 98 Regency Brogham, and yes, ss paint is fun to work with, however getting all that pigment and oxidation out of the pads is just about impossible. See 1 pad in the first hood pic up at the front on the bench and that was after about 20 minutes of washing with dawn and simple green.

Astounding! That's unbelievable that 22 year old paint can still look that nice! Keep it clean, that will be worth a lot of money one day in that shape. I would love to see one of the modern polymer based seal on that paint- marriage of old and new technology.

Nothing wrong with your fathers Oldsmoble. If your father liked it you should too. I wish I had some of my fathers cars, he had some cool ones.

Any "before" pics? I'm curious how bad the oxidation was before you started.

No good before pics, sorry. There didn't appear to be that bad an oxidation problem. There were lots of spots, and trails, hard to describe but maybe places were some sort of liquid had sat on the paint and etched and in some places even ate into the surface. Oxidation and etching was mainly on the horizontal surfaces. The main issues were scratches. You can imagine with the car set up for 10 years how many boxes and other things were placed on the trunk and hood and inevitably pushed or pulled with the obligitory layer of dust and dirt. But even the sides had lots of scratches. That's why I put the car up on jack stands, to enable me to work the sides a little easier.
