  • AE88 Machine Cleaned - 90% done. 56k WARNING

Finally got myself a Bosch PEX400AE and decided to test it on something a little safer than my own car:

Mate of mine agreed that I could not make the paint on his car any worse. We started with a wash (Check the water cling!):

4"x4" claying. Amazingly, this half-bar is still useable after doing the entire vehicle:

    Tape for hood test:

At this point we decided it was going to rain soon. The plan was to do all the machineable paint parts now, and finish aall of the edges etc at a later date.

    The obligatory Hood-half:

    And swirl check:

Apart from the oxidation, this SS paint was in good condition. No auto washes in its lifetime, so the paint was smooth where **** hadn't embedded itself.

    Sides and roof:

The go-fast stripes were a joke. It started sprinkling soon after that pic so I didn't get the chance to get rid of them

Done! Obligatory shot with my car:

    The cake:

    And then the real cleaning:

And the technicals (sorry forgot again!)

Cleaned with #2 Fine Cut on a 8" Foam Cutting Pad.
I had #9 and a polishing pad available, and it worked but wasn't very effective. Also tried #9 on the cutting pad (I know I know don't mix products), bit better, but one pass of the #2 on W7000 was perfect.

Applied a small 3" diameter circle of product (actually a smiley face at later stages like Joe ), marked out a 2'x2' square on the #1 setting no pressure, then slowly moved across, along and diagonally over the square on my #2 setting with medium pressure. Zero splash, product worked and easily removed. No dry buffs, no overly wet wipe-offs.

I did notice a slight decrease in performance after I finished the hood and moved to the sides. I realised that because I was getting confident, I was working faster, which meant the product wasn't being diminished properly. Patience is a virtue, and I managed to get the sides and roof done without any major issues

Next project will be a CC car, still not mine, and still in a condition where I can do no further damage without a major stuffup. Hopefully I'll be able to reuse the cutting pad, it looks like I managed to get most of the product (and paint) out by wrapping it in a towel as per Meguiars instructions and squeezing.
