  • Johnny Law times 5

So my Town got 5 new Police cruisers, all in a new paint sceme. (old ones were grey)

I bid and and received the contract to 1 step (#66) all 5.

I had to do quite a bit of clay work as the Radio Installation people left the metal filings all over the paint when they drilled for antennas, and the shop that painted the white did a **** job of masking and there was a ton of white overspray.

I hired my neighbor and we started at about 8:30 in the morning.

    We finshed about 4pm.

I didn't plan on doing any interior work, but we ended up vaccumming and wiping down the vinyl just because.

Painted the white?? They don't buy them from the factory with the black and white paint scheme like everybody else?

From what I gather from the local police here, they have a seperate company prep the cars for police use. Paint, interior, radios and I even think the stronger suspension/engine combo.

It's a factory package. The car gets heavy duty everything and the paint as well. They aren't really particular about how neatly the paint is laid as it doesn't really matter to the end user like a personal car.

These cars can be ordered with the factory black/white combination. Whether they did or not is another story. Depending on the department, some have there own install techs, some bid it out. Stronger suspension/engine combo? Nope. The crown vic p71's(police models) come from the factory the way they are, which already a sufficient stenght full frame and the engine is the same as in the civilian model crown vic, only difference being the p71's(designated by the vin code) is they are factory dual exhaust which increases the horsepower rating while the civilian ones are single exhaust , except the SPORT model which also has dual exhaust.

Do the police there get to take their cars home? If yes, are they then responsible for cleaning and waxing them? I always wondered that.

Indiana State Police get to take their cars home. But they have inspections, and their cars are expected to be squeaky clean. I wondered if they are expected to be polished and waxed. And BTW their cruisers are black with gold stripes!

I can just see the post commander doing the squeaky towel test to see if there is a wax coating on the paint. Or maybe looking at each car with a xenon light to check for swirls.

There is a factory upcharge for the painting, the impression I am under is that the local prep dealer doesn't charge for it, or charges less.

They order the cruisers in black and then paint them before delivery. It also allows for a more custom paint scheme by different Towns. I checked, the door jambs.......they are black.

The local company installs everything from center consoles to radios to the cage in the back...........it all depends on what you want to pay for.

Our Town doesn't take the cars home. Our State Police do. Policy is different for place to place.

There is a large facility here in Marlborough called MHQ that is a Daimler Chrysler and Ford dealership that specializes in putting together police cruisers and other municipal vehilces, like fire department support vehicles, etc.

They take the basic police intereceptor packages and install light bars, radio systems, customer specific options and custom paint the vehicles to the community's specs.

I was doing some "data mining" for my fire department's emergency contact database at MHQ last week and saw 5 new Mustang GT's being prepped for the Massachusetts State Police.

They are totally unmarked.. the only "giveaways" are the additional glass mounted antnenas and two small strobes mounted on the rear deck. The blue strobes in the front are integrated into the fog lights... talk about a stealth machine!

The colors were the new grabber orange, torch red, vista blue and black.
