  • Back to the basics

I cleaned up a car that is sort of special to me today. My parents bought it when I was in college.

This was the car that first introduced me to Meguiar's. At the time my parents never had new cars as they were very thrifty about things to make sure they could put us in braces, put us in college, put us in whatever came down the pike. So this was the first new car they bought since I was born, though we often got cars as hand-me-downs from our grandparents.

Anyway, my mom wanted to keep the car nice, so she bought a bottle of wax on the recommendation of a service advisor at the dealership (or someone like that). The bottle of wax was a bottle of Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax.

I of course was the one who washed and waxed the car, and I really liked how well the Cleaner/Wax worked compared to the other tins and bottles of various waxes. I used to wash and wax the car in exchange for driving it, though I obviously didn't have to. I enjoyed it and my mom was glad to have it taken care of.

At some point in the next couple years I saw Gold Class Car Wax on the shelf, and as it had the Meguiar's name on it, a name I was now familiar with, I bought it for my new-to-me Corvette. I believe that bottle had the Meguiar's website on it, which opened a whole new world to me. This was like 1997, so most companies didn't have websites. Meguiar's was filled with all sorts of tips and how-to and FAQ sections that really changed the way I thought about detailing.

Anyway, so here the car is back. My sister and brother-in-law inherited the car a few years back (the tradition continues) and replaced it recently. We will only have it briefly as it is going to my mother-in-law who currently tends to drive '70s beater Caprices. We'll be glad to know she'll be driving something a bit safer with ABS, airbags, and of course decent brakes and tires.

To get to the point, I couldn't resist the urge to once again Meguiar's the car. Today I cleaned the engine up with All Purpose Cleaner Plus and Engine Kote, washed the car, and waxed it with ColorX. The paint needs more help than that, but the ColorX really did a great job. It took off a ton of dirt as evidenced by the applicator, and in spite of that it still buffed off very easily.

    So here it is.
