The owner of this black 2005 Vette was leaving town for a couple of days and wanted me to detail his baby. So he turned over his keys to his 530 hp (yes its modified) car to me, and told me to work my magic on it.
He is the second owner, and is generally a good owner who takes care of his baby, and uses Meguiars products. The only problem was with the first owner, who obviously neglected the car. To make matters worse, the Corvette sat outside of a Chevy dealership, next to water sprinklers for 2 weeks, allowing mud like sprinkler water to get burned into the paint (etched isn't a strong enough word). The paint was in rough shape, so follow along as I did my best to get it the way it should.
The first step was to wash the Corvette, using Meguiars Hyperwash, dilluted 400:1. I used two grit guards and the two bucketmethod.
I then clayed then entire Corvette using Meguiars Quik Clay and Last Touch Detail spray, cut 1:1. I did this while the car was still wet. Then I rinsed the entire car using the sheeting method and wiped it clean using two Water Magnets. You might notice that I removed the license plate to make sure I could effectivly wash all sections of the car.
Then I inspected the paint using a Brinkman Dual Xenon light. The results where pad in some areas and horrifying others. Unfortunatly, I deleted some of the worse pictures by accident.
There was also an area of very deep scratches that the owner requested that I do my best to remove. The Xenon's battery was going deep, but believe me when I say these where deep.
I tried 2 passes with 84/7006 on the Hitachi at 1700 RPM and it didn't put a dent in them, so I went to the big guns. 85/4000 Wool pad at 2000 RPM. Here is a picture after 2 passes of 85 Diamond Cut on the scratched area, using only the flash of the camera (the Xenon was getting recharged).
You can see the combination of aggresive pad and harsh cut but some serious swirls in the paint, but completely leveled the scratches.
Here is a pic of the same area after a pass of 83/DACP via rotary @ 1500. You can see some of the swirls cleaning up nicely.
Then I went over the area twice with 80 Speedglaze/8000 @ 1000 RPM, and once with 80 Speedglaze/8006 on the PC.
The rest of the car recieved 83/8006 at 1500 RPMs, followed by 80/8000 at 1000 RPM. After this the entire car was polished with #80/8006 on the PC.
Here is an after picture using the Xenon.
The rims where cleaned with Meguiars Wheel Brightner and Tires with 4:1 APC. Then the rims got a coat of #21 on the tires got some Hot Shine.
