  • My first customer detail.. Dads restored 79 VW Bug. (lots of pics!)

Well.. almost 2 yrs ago my father purchased a 79 Convertable VW bug with 60K original miles. It needed some TLC, ok well a lot, so he sent it to Montana (we're in CA) to a place that specializes in restoring VW bugs. Goldenbeetle.com .

He drove out to pick it up last week and brought it home. Thing is it had sat for several months after paint.. and unfortunately after many quick washes by the shop, and the elements in general, the paint was in pretty bad shape. Now that its back.. he asked me to take it for a day or two and make it shine. Heres some before and afters.

I originally was going to do this by hand... but after reading a article about white paint I knew I was in for a challenge. Well.. 5 passes on the hood with ScratchX did literally nothing. So I ended up using a DA with other Megs products. Let me just say.. this job kinda kicked my butt.. this white paint was laughing at me, so I had to beat the heck out of it with the #83/#80 with multiple pad combos via DA.

    Products used:

    -Rich Suds Megs soap
    -Megs QD and Megs clay
    -#83 with DA x many
    -#80 with DA x many
    -#7 by hand x 2
-NXT tech wax light coat by hand x 1
    -Megs Natural Shine for interior
-Megs Gold Class Endurance on tires
-Flitz metal polish for chrome and gas cap

(I have an order of #21 coming so Im going to add that next week.)

    BEFORE:

    Overspray!!!!

There was a lot of nice trim on the car so just to be safe I taped everything.

    PREPPING:

Socks make for nice vintage mirror covers!

    GETTIN' THERE!

    BREAK TIME.

    AFTER.

CAR CRAZY = ATTENTION TO DETAIL.

Right side is after a little polishing, left side was not touched.. this cap was seriously weathered and showed its age. When I delivered the car back to my Dad he thought I had bought a new cap for him!

    Almost done....

Not too shabby! My Dad was really impressed!

I would also like to say THANK YOU to Meguiarsonline.com. You have no idea how much I have learned in the last few weeks by reading on this site. I couldnt have done it without you guys!

Very nice bug. The interior looks so simple, yet functional.

              "What's that smell ?"

"Oh it's nothing dad, just the *ahem* product I used on the mirrors."
