  • Satin Red Astra - Starting Pics

We like Astras in our family!!

After detailing my car, it was on to my dad's rather less well cared for, ten year old Astra Estate. I had hoped to have the car fully detailed today but the rain put paid to that. Still, I got it washed with Meguiars #62 (took two hours, you'll see why from the first pic!) and clayed with Meguiars Quick Clay, and then managed to do the roof with before the rain spoiled the day altogether! I decided to trial the Menzerna products which have recently become easily accessible in the UK. Used Menzerna Intensive polish on an orange power pad by PC - required several passes (I went up to speed 6, seemed to work well despite the instructions saying speed 3.5 - 4) and three goes to get rid of the swirl marks! I need a rotary... Then followed this with Menz FP2 on a light cut pad, then Menz FTG on a finishing pad and Menz FMJ by hand.

Here's the car before I started...

Here's a close up shot of the swirl marks on the roof, severe and quite deep - needed quite a bit of work to shift...

And here's the "tram-line" scratches on the roof robbing the panel of any gloss at all! Obviously been battered by a car wash for ten years...

After the above process, here's a few pics of the roof completed (took over an hour, but I do work slowly...)

Swirl marks gone (stone chip in shot, though, how'd a stone hit the roof?!)

Gloss restored (I love Menzerna!!) Weather is deceptively sunny there!

Another close up shot of the reflections in the roof...

And another of the roof from a different angle...

And finally a nice bright sun shot to try to show the absence of swirl marks...

These are just teaser pics for the whole detail, which weather permitting (please stay dry, just one day, is it too much to ask?! ) I will have completed tomorrow. As you can see from the first pic, there's a lot needs doing to this car, but I'm up for a bit of a challenge, so we'll see how it turns out.

Hope you like the first pics! I know that this is a Meguiars forum, so I hope people don't mind me posting the pics of my second detail of the spring, where the paintwork was polished, finished and sealed with Menzerna products (which I'm currently trialling and enjoying) - I use a huge range of products from a whole host of manufacturers in my detailing and Meguiars makes up a significant proportion, especially of my interior kit and washes...

Astras are made by Vauxhall and also Opel. Vauxhall is a UK car firm owned by GM, and opel is the equivalent on the European continent (Opel being a German car firm, owned by GM).

        Hi Tron1974

In Europe it's Opel, while UK has it's own line made by Vauxall.

They are basically the same, exept grill-details (you see the Vauxall-emblem in the picture) and that most of the Vauxall's have the steering-wheel on the right-hand side.
