  • Top Secret Rub-out / Alpine Bmw

Recently I was contacted by Kevin Brown, "iamwaxman", and invited to Alpine headquarters to help color sand and polish out Alpines 2006 BMW show car.

I met Kevin Brown when I attended Meguiars first NXT class, NXT CLASS / SEPT. 2004 . He was one of the instructors for the class.

We have kept in touch since and he finally called me to help on one of the many awesome projects he gets to do.

I was contacted a just a few days before the rub out and because of the short notice I had to reluctantly decline the invitation due to a full work day that day.

I did offer my services “after hours” if he needed me as back up.

About 9pm I got Kevin’s message on my voice mail asking if I had a little time to spare on the rub-out. The message time stamp was at about 5pm and I just about kicked myself for not checking my messages sooner.

I got to Alpines HQ just before 10pm and fired up my buffer. My job was to buff out areas that had been color-sanded a second or third time with a wool pad to get them perfect. Then I was to finish off the panels with, “whatever I thought was best.”

Kevin had Meguiars complete arsenal and then some!

I found the paint to be VERY fresh and difficult to polish but Kevin and myself tried a number of product and pad combinations and got the finish look like GLASS.

A number of people where buzzing around the car. Some worked a time on the body along side me for awhile and others had a go at the hood and other loose parts. All day long different people color-sand and polished on the car so I can only take a very small part of the credit for how the car turned out.

What a pleasure it was to be told, ‘MAKE IT PERFECT!” And Kevin was really cool to work with.

Below you will find a few before pics. I never saw the car completed. Kevin called me this afternoon from the Consumer electronics Show in Vegas to tell me the car looks AWSOME and should win an award! He promised some pictures of the car when he returned.

What is Kevin smiling about in this pic?? He still had 8-9 hours of polishing to do!!

Yes I know there is a Mothers sticker on the cabinet. The Alpine guys know better now-

Look at that concentration! Look at that reflection!

Orange peel is absolutly banned from this car!

Here is a close up of the finish. No dirt, runs, orange peel, scratches or swirl marks. Is it perfect? I hope so.

I called it quits at about 6 hours of buffing. I think Kevin did almost 20+ hours straight.

The alpine mini was there. I had to pass it on the way to the restroom.

It has been on the show curcit for awhile and is in need of some love.

Awesome work. I saw the feature that was done on the Alpine BMW X5 on the show "Rides: for the Consumer Electronics Show. Its was an amazing car.

They also talked about the Mini that they did.

Great work! What did you end up using on that very fresh paint?

Thanks all for the compliments. Keep in mind I had a very small part of the whole project.

                        Mike,

The car is put together and being presented this weekend at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas.

When Kevin returns from the show he will (hopefully) post pics of the car.

How funny to find this thread! I actually work for Alpine in the Torrance office. No, I'm not involved in any of the show cars or even in the stereo systems. I'm a lowly IT guy there. But I do see our cars parked in the back, in the workbay, and even in our lobby! Yes, the cars are just as nice up close (and on the inside!). Keep up the good work!

Joe & Kevin... Do we look tired to you?

As Joe stated previously, we spent some quality buffing-time together at Alpine Electronics of America.
I'll be doing a full write-up of the sand and polish session (with pictures of all involved) very soon!
