What I think is amazing is how far engine technology has progressed in the past 10-15 years.
I had a 1989 5.0L V8 Camaro RS (TBI) that had 170hp, and 190fp torque. My Cavalier has a 2.2L l-4 that has 140hp / 150fp, only 30hp/40fp torque less than an engine twice it's size.
My wife's Jeep has an l-6, 4.0L with 190hp /220 torque.
Your 3.8 V6 is rated (stock) at roughly 200hp/210? Torque...right between the TBI and Tuned Port 5.0 Chevy V8 engine of the late 80's, early 90's... The list goes on and on.
People lament the loss of the big-block muscle cars and the death of "the good old days." While I agree that today's cars are smaller, with less elbow room and to some extent lack the charisma of the legends, the engines of today can be just as potent, and given my examples above, even more so from the factory than their Muscle Car-era counterparts.
It wasn't all that long ago that is was unthinkable that a V6 would run a 1.7 sec 60' time, and the 1/4 in 13.24 sec @ 103.70 mph....

Also remember the stringent laws back in the 80's and early 90's that lowered overall horsepower (on most American V8 engines) due to emmissions requirements.
But it is very awesome how advances have been made and now we have much better fuel economy and emissions and more power to the wheels.
About the engines increasing in power and efficency.
I drive an Inline6 jeep like Don mentioned, its 4.0L, yet my father drives a 3.9L V8 that puts out about 290 HP, that 100 more HP stock over mine. Just shows how much technology has come in the past few years.
