  • 2005 Black E500 Mercedes Detail

This was one of those detail jobs that required some minor defect removal, including light swirls. From a few feet away, the finish looked just fine, and I didn't expect the before and after pix to show a dramatic difference. However, I was glad to see a noticeable difference in the test spot, and that I did successfully take the finish to the next level, despite running out of sun to check my results.

This job involved the PC and my Makita rotary using M83, M80, #7 and Tech Wax.

NXT Tech Wax is described as:

After 10 years of research and development into advanced polymer chemistry, Meguiar's has created a wax powered by Engineered Synthetic Polymers (ESP) technology. The result is the most advanced synthetic protectant available for today’s modern paint finishes. Our ESP technology eliminates fine scratches and swirls and leaves your finish deeper, wetter, shinier and more reflective.

Wondering what it means or look like to have a finish that's deeper, wetter, shinier, and more reflective?? That right angle marking is a tape line where I had taped off a MF towel. The lighter area is before applying #80, #7 and NXT Tech Wax. The darker area has been buffed out and polished using a PC with a yellow pad and a finishing pad.

The darker part on the left is the treated area. While this comparison is difficult to tell what looks better, there is no doubt that the paint is getting deeper. I intentionally tried to shoot an object where you could compare the sharpness of the reflection--the tree leaves--but it's difficult to tell from this picture.

I went ahead and blended the areas together, so now the whole hood is seamless.

The Customer had a new satellite radio antennae installed. The original one was too big. With the smaller antennae, there was a ring that was left behind. Claybar removed about 80% of it, and the rest was buffed out with the rotary, a yellow pad, and M80.

    Less visible after claybar!

    Almost perfect!

While the paint looked great, there were some visible defects.

I spent a lot of time with the rotary and the PC removing swirls and minor scratches.

    BEFORE

By the time I finished, it was dark

I came back the next day and took this picture, although again it was dark!!! Didn't help that this customer lives over an hour away and our days have gotten shorter!

Important thing is that the client loved the new look of her car, and as far as I know, has fired her normal detailer to hire me. []

I had to lighten this picture quite a bit.

      Hey Richard,

      Great work!

Glad to see you've started using a rotary. Another tool in your toolbox.

Thanks! I'm really comfortable with it now. My first real work was on an old green Saturn that the customer--actually roommate of a friend of mine--didn't care about.

That's a great way to start. My first rotary job was my daughter in laws black pathfinder. It had 145,000 miles on it and a couple of dented fenders. Great training material.

Yeah I had a real work out that day cause the Saturn was the 2nd car I detailed with the rotary. The first was my friends Ford F-150 Extended Cab with Tonneau Cover--so lots of surface area.

I bet that Pathfinder was a great training tool. I was pretty fortunate that this Saturn's paint was in relatively good condition despite the numerous major defects---no clear coat failure atleast!

Not like my sister in laws car as below! (No I didn't work on this car!!!) This is what happens when you don't take care of your paint at all!!!
