  • My 85 Fiero

Well I was going to get it painted but ran out of time before winter so I decided just wait till I get everything working perfect 1st before I paint it. So I figured it would be worth buffing it out and making it look a little nicer.

The top and passenger side of the car was pretty faded. The car had had a cheap single stage paint job in the past it looks like.

I did 1 pass with a Groits 6" random Orbital, Meguiars Ultimate Compound, and with a Purple Lake County Kompressor foam pad.

Its not perfect by any means but it looks 10x better. Still need to do about half the car still the worst of it that is able to be fixed without reapainting is done.

What a difference! Those 50:50 shots are awesome

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Like you said, it may not be perfect but the improvement is incredible! If this car did have a cheap respray several years ago there's only so much you can really do to maximize the potential of that paint. Wet sanding and compounding, if you know what you're doing, will yield the best result, but to make this sort of improvement with a DA and a consumer compound would really shock a lot of people!

        Nicely done!!

          Looks great....

Some #80 in the future might take it even further. Always nice to not need to re-paint things, and save (or spend) the money elsewhere.

Those Fiero's can be finicky. My oldest brother back in '84 bought a brand new Fiero 2M4, and within a few months he had acid rain spots in the paint. After writing to GM and calling the dealer etc they agreed to try to "correct" the paint. So it was wet sanded and buffed - looked fantastic. But within a few weeks the spots were back. He lived with it until he traded it for a brand new '86 Fiero GT. Can't remember if the GT had the same problem - but I know he kept it indoors during winter.
