  • 2004 Eddie Bauer Explorer Makeover (56K Warning)

This is my wife’s new 2004 Eddie Bauer Explorer. We purchased this vehicle on February 3, 2005 used from a dealership. Per my request, the dealership didn’t do the standard dealership pre-delivery detail on it thus, most likely, eliminating some problems that would typically be encountered on a used dealership vehicle. It did, however, need some TLC after several test drives and several washes from a car wash at the dealership.

Here’s the vehicle in ‘delivery’ condition…

Salty grime extended front to back and everywhere in-between…

While the swirling was moderate to light, being a CAR CRAZY GURU, I wanted to take them out and bring the paint back to par…

I started by washing with Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo & Conditioner and the ‘two-bucket’ method. I utilized a Grit Guard Insert in my rinse water bucket. Starting at the top of the vehicle, I worked downward with the Lambs Wool Wash Mitt I was using. I utilized the ‘late/great’ Citri-Gel as the product of choice to clean my wheel wells and Gold Class All Wheel Cleaner on the wheels themselves. After a complete wash and a complete dry with my Microfiber Drying Towels, it was time to clay the entire vehicle.

I opted to use Professional Detailing Clay (actually, the old Body Shop Professional Clay – I’ve got to use old stock first!) lubricated with Final Inspection. The vehicles finish really didn’t have much bonded contamination and thus, this step went fairly quickly.

I next moved to wheels, wells, and tires. Using Hot Shine High Gloss Tire Spray (Trigger), I carefully coated all of the tires. Using an applicator pad, I evened out the product and followed with a shop towel to remove any excess product. After that, I applied a liberal amount of Hot Shine to the black coatings in the wheel wells to bring out the gloss and black out the wells (this is often a step that is overlooked by many folks detailing a vehicle and is a personal pet-peeve of mine. Make sure those wells look good before sending it out to the road!!).

After getting the wheels, the wells, and the tires in good shape and a top to bottom clay, I went straight to #80 Speed Glaze applied with a polishing pad on my PC set at 4. Working the product slowly, I progressed from top to bottom, side to side until the entire vehicle was complete. I pulled the vehicle back out into the sun to assess the finish and needed to go back over one or two panels as it appeared that I got a bit too quick with the machine movement. After the second application, all was well and the paint was, generally, swirl-free.

Switching pads to a finishing pad, I applied a coat of NXT to the entire vehicle (PC set at 3). Utilizing my free help (AKA: My Wife), we removed all of the NXT residue and opted to go for a second coat to ensure uniform coverage as well as uniform protection. After going through the same process, we pulled it back out into the sun to assess the application once more. We removed the remaining tiny spots of residue that we missed while in the low-light garage and enjoyed the swirl-free reflection…

As I mentioned, the two main products that were utilized during this detail were, #80 Speed Glaze and NEW NXT Generation Tech Wax Paste.

    Summary of Products Utilized:
Gold Class Rich Leather Aloe Cleaner
Gold Class Rich Leather Aloe Conditioner
    #39 Heavy Duty Vinyl Cleaner
    Quik Interior Detailer
    NXT Generation Glass Cleaner
    Citri-Gel
Hot Shine High Gloss Tire Spray (Trigger)
    Professional Detailing Clay
    #80 Speed Glaze
    Gold Class All Wheel Cleaner
    NXT Generation Tech Wax
    APC+
Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo & Conditioner

Obviously, after looking at the products used, you can see that I also did the interior. Fortunately, this space was in really good shape to begin with and thus, a quick go-over with Rich Aloe Cleaner and Conditioner, a quick wipe-down with Interior Quik Detailer (I love this stuff!), a vac job, and a complete in and out glass wipedown with the New NXT Glass Cleaner (a KILLER product!!!!!), I was done with the interior (in less than 10 minutes might I add!).

Thanks for reading! Feel free to ask any questions that you may have!

That looks really good Rockpick! Good job!

What kind of brush did you use to clean the wheels and brake dust?

I can see in one pic your wife it looks like is sitting in the driver's seat. Was she saying "Come ON honey, quick taking pictures, I need to go to the store" ?

LOL! That *is* the wife and she *was* wanting to leave. She had some baby-shower or something to bolt off to and I was holding her up with the pictures. Good read on that! LOL!

      As for brushes...

I didn't utilze a brush on the wheels for this particular run as I really wanted to get personal with the vehicle and find the spots that I didn't see pre-purchase. So, in short, I was down there with a small sponge and a bunch of elbow grease just to see how everything looked down there.

                    Thanks folks! I appreciate it.

I edited my original post slightly. I had, in my list of products used, mentioned that NXT Paste was utilized. It was NXT liquid. Just thought I'd mention that...

Oh yes. Go figure. It's raining cats and dogs today. I'm pretty sure I could find a market for cities/watersheds who haven't had rain in a while to hire me to create rain. Oh well...

Looks good. Nice clear refelctions clean wells and abundant amount of flake. How long did this take you to complete. I agree with you about dirty wheel wells. Did you clean the wells before dressing them?

Great questions Eric. I should have included those with my initial post.

Start to finish, with one 15 minute break or so, it took around 5 hours.

As for the wells, that's where the Citri-Gel was utilized. Citri-Gel is an old favorite of mine however; since its absence, I've grown to love SAFE D-GREASER and a foaming sprayer. The foaming action helps the chemical 'stick' in place to allow for better and longer dwell times and yields equally good (if not better) results than the late CG. Again, I'm working on burning through some old stock before chugging into the new stuff.

                        Thanks again for the questions!!

When the wife says she's leaving at 230, that means she's leaving at 230 regardless of whether or not their is a coat of wax to still be removed or if only three of the tires are dressed.

Like FSL mentioned in an earlier post, I was getting an 'evil stare' during those last few pictures of the Explorer in the sun. LOL! She just about drove off with the NXT and #80 secondary bottle on her hood! LMAO!
