  • 2007 GMC Sierra (Hologram City!)

So a co-worker of mine purchased this truck a couple of weeks ago. When he bought the truck he did not notice that it was COVERED in holograms. Although I dont know how.
Even people at work that dont really know very much, if anything, about paint were like, "Whats wrong with that? It doesnt look right!"

Needless to say, we scheduled an appointment and I took the truck later that week. He told me the price he wanted to spend and I wrote up a bid for him that included a wash, clay, two step correction, and a basic interior. His main concern were the holograms though.

I was a bit nervous looking at the truck because I had not done a correction this extensive before.

    Process:
    Shampoo Plus-Microfiber mitt
    Megs Mild clay-Last Touch
M105/ M205-Cutting, Polishing, and Finishing Pads (By the way. In 114 degree heat, the 105 literally flashed instantly)
Sealed with M21 2.0 on the G110 and a Finishing Pad

Here it is after the wash.

Disclaimer: This paint may make you, dizzy, nautious, disoriented or all three. If you have any heart conditions or could possibly be pregnant, please exit this thread immediately. You have been warned.

On to claying. Obviously the guy that "Detailed" this before did not clay. This is 1/2 of a panel.

Okay, now fast forward about 20 hours. I did not take any between pictures. I only had this truck for two days and I was working non stop. I logged 11 hours the first day. The temp was 114 outside and I thought my wife was going to have to give me an IV. I wasnt feeling so good.

My wife and I got up at 5am the next morning to get started before it got "hot". We pulled the truck out of the garage to find it was a cool 97 degrees outside. Gotta love Az.

After some extensive test spots, I found that the 105 Cutting pad combo and 205 Polishing pad combo was too aggresive and I was leaving my own holograms. It was probably more my technique causing them than the products but we finally settled on 105 on a polishing pad and 205 on a finishing pad. This of course did not remove all of the swirls and RIDS that were present but this did remove all of the hologrmas and still achieved about 85% correction.

Here is a shot after compounding and polishing. There was still some dust left on the surface in this pic which was removed with a 1:1 alcohol/water solution. Looking much better though.

I did find one shot of what the paint looked like before.

Here are some after sealed with the M21

And finally some outsie shots. Sorry they are not better but I literally had 5 minutes to take pictures before we had to leave to deliver the truck.

28 man hours of hard work over two days paid off. Enjoy.

Those are clouds by the way ^.

Thanks everyone for looking. Hope you enjoyed it.

    Great job Bob!

I have an '09 black Sierra that was beat up in a car wash. Those holograms on your co-workers truck were nasty. Hopefully your co-worker uses a better washing route. It's a very nice truck, but they are pretty easy to scratch. You can't breath on a black GMC without leaving mark.

I've been able to keep my truck in decent shape with a two bucket wash. Likely it will only need SwirlX or something mild next spring to get it back to near perfect condition.

Great save. That truck was nasty. Hologram city. Now, the truck looks fantastic. Your buddy had to notice the difference.

I was very surprised to see how soft the paint was. Black is such a beautiful color when its kept up, but turns on you in an instant if you dont. I certainly hope he does take good care of it but im afraid he may be a coin-op kind of guy.

He was very pleased. He wont be embarassed to drive it now. Thanks

Wow, the previous detailer actually showed extreme talent - I've never seen so many holograms! Must have taken him years of practice to be able to instill holograms like that!

Awesome job - hats of to you for working in the heat.

Great work on the truck. I can't believe any detailer pro or amateur would think their job was done and it was set to leave them the way it was when you started.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                  I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
                  Remove swirls my friends.

I think possibly he/she was buffing in the dark?

I did Steve's Suburban about a week ago. Same thing. 110-112 and it took 3 days. Will post pics maybe next week.

Two incredible jobs there - an incredibly poor one and an incredibly fantastic one to fix the poor one!!

                          Nicely done.

Although this may have been said in jest, I think working in a poorly lit area is one of the biggest reasons we see detailing nightmares like this. Under poor lighting conditions this GMC probably looked quite decent, but once viewed in full sunlight the true condition is revealed.

I can't believe how bad those holograms were...

The silver one demands nothing and it looks just fine. I think the black vehicle is taking advantage of me, and the silver car is more my style. We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.
