  • Auto Unlimited Makeover: 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo

I worked on this car a few months ago. It's pulling about 500 HP on pump gas, more on race gas. Fun car and very fast.

The car has very low mileage (<40k) but it for sure didn't look like it. The car sat at the shop a few times for extended period so the interior is dirty with leaves, tree branches, etc. Even the driver's seat smelled like used engine oil.

The owner also owned two dogs, so I got dog hair everywhere. The car is not garaged either and rarely washed, so the paint has crazy amount of contaminants and defects. The usual, bird droppings and tree saps are everywhere and allowed to damage the clear coat.

The engine bay was surprisingly clean but everything else was just bad.

The wing was not on the car because it was being repainted because of clear coat failure.

The owner doesn't plan to garage the car after the detail and he's planning to keep the car for another few years, so I didn't go crazy polishing it. I was aiming at 80% correction.

The owner's primary concern is the interior and he wants me to focus in it and I did. I basically shampooed the seats and all carpeting. All the hard surfaces were cleaned with APC+. Interior was not dressed at all.

Unfortunately it was mainly cloudy on the delivery day, so it's difficult to get good pics with reflection from the sun.

    Tools and products used:
    Makita rotary and PC
Assortment of orange, white, and black large and small Lake Country pads.
Prima Swirl, Amigo, Epic, and Banana Gloss for added kick.
Meguiar's APC+, HD, Last Touch, blue clay.
Leatherique Prestine Clean for the leather parts
    Multiple brushes, towels, lights.
    Bissel LGM
    ShopVac
    Radio!

    On to the pics............

Dirty water JUST from the driver's seat. I shampooed the seat three times. Although it looks better, it's still not like new but the owner was thrilled to see the results.

How in the world could you care enough about a car to get 500hp from a turbocharged 4 banger yet not care about it and let it go to garbage? Doesn't make sense to me.

I also thought the EVO's were single stage paint, not BC/CC. Was it repainted or just the wing?

Nice job on it, though. It looks awesome now, like it should.

The car has original paint and it's clear coated, except parts like mirror caps. Only part of the wing (the horizontal part) is repainted.

I couldn't understand it either. I mean, no need to be anal retentive but at least maintain it. But hey, that's how I stay in business....

Great save. It looks a lot better. No doubt the owner was thrilled with your results. That is the way it should look. Way to go.

That car was a mess. Great job on getting it cleaned up and looking a whole lot better. Must have taken some time to finish it up I assume. Also I don't think I have ever seen that color on the Evo.

You should post some after pictures when the car is not soaking wet!

(that is how good the shine looks!)

Nice car, GREAT work, looks dripping wet, BUT I think the owners pulling your chain about his HP #s.. Engine bay looks stock... Nice work on the shine though

Re: Auto Unlimited Makeover: 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo

                  ^^ Thanks!

The car does feel like 500 HP because I actually drove it from and back to his residence. I've driven other 500 HP cars such as the new M5 and M6, etc and this car actually feels faster, maybe because of all the engine noises.

The big turbo actually shows under the modified exhaust manifold cover but you can't see it in my pics. The airbox you see there is no longer functional. It's just the top cover and a little of the bottom part. The rest has been gutted away to make room for the plumbing underneath and hide the actual HKS air filter. The bumper has been modified to make room for the large intercooler but still looks somewhat stock. The motor is now 2.3L, up from 2.0L. Even the radiator is a much larger aftermarket one because the stock part can't handle the heat. It has a LOT more engine mods that I can't recall now.

Looks awesome!! Can't believe somebody put theirs Dog in a evo.
and you said the car is pushing 500HP? but he still has the stock intake? upgrade the intake is like the simple bolt-ons for every car.

Hi mate just wondering what kinds of vacuum do you use to vacuum the seats?

i see lots of dirt water in your pics

                        thanks!

I used Bissell LGM to clean the seats.

To people who call BS: I don't know what kind of turbo he's running. I'm not really into these cars myself. But a few things I do know, the stock intake you see in the engine bay is gutted and not functional. All that remains is the top cover. I saw HKS round filter under the gutted airbox. The motor has been stroked to 2.3L and running cams and Cosworth head. I also know how 500 HP feels; I've driven enough cars with 500 HP or more.

                          Thanks for the compliments though.

Does it really matter if you think the car has that much power or not, simply by the "looks" of it on top of it all? Ever heard of a sleeper? The thread is about a detail job, which was a very good one at that! Nice work!
