  • 2004 Nissan 350Z Buffer hologram removal

Well here's the latest batch of fun. This 04 350Z has a mere 4,000 miles on it and as you can see had some wounderful dealer prep done.

The whole car has holograms like this in it, but they were hard to capture. Some of the people at the Arizona Detail day got to see this, they'll vouche for me.

But overall a decent car aside from the buffer holograms.

I was lucky enough to be able to bring this car to the Detail Day and get an opinion right from the top, Mike Pennington (thats the guy on the professional bottles). I had the car parked in the shade so I pulled it over to where he could see it in the sun. He wasn't even within 10 feet of the car and he loudly proclaimed "who buffed this car?"

It wasn't me, I sware, like I said before bad dealer prep I'm sure. He recommended I use 83 with the rotary then come back with 83 on the Porter Cable, and he was dead on with that recommendation (as if there was any doubt of course).

Here's a picture that didn't come out so well, but shows the difference pretty well. This is at night, but under the metal halide lights we have out back (they show everything).

So I washed and clayed the car. It must have been sitting around for a while without any care because it majorly needed clayed. It was so bad you could still hear the clay picking up stuff after 4 or 5 passes on an area (this is using the detailer mild clay).

The hologram removal consisted of 83 on a foam pad at 1400 rpm worked in well with a significant amount of downard pressure. I had to mist the product with some distilled water to keep it moist enough because it was so hot out. Otherwise it would immediately go in to a dry buff. Then I came back with the PC on 5 with another foam pad and 83 again. Topped it off with NXT and here's what the end results were.

    This car's growing on me.

      And a few more shots.

No more holograms! The car still has some swirls in it, but they have been significantly reduced. I was satisfied, my main objective of removing the holograms happened. Total I think I had something like 10 hours in to this car. The rotary buffing took a significant amount of time because I had to work slowly and thoroughly to remove the rids. I did luck out that they wern't too deep though.

Included in that 10 hours was an interior cleaning, which wasn't much to speak of. The floor mats had about as much use as they'd see after 4K miles, but I wanted to make the car as factory new as possible so I shampoo'd the two passenger and one rear cargo mats with all purpose cleaner plus. I used #40 on the interior to enhance the still there new car smell. The leather was conditioned with the new Detailer line leather cleaner/conditioner (which also made the new car smell even stronger). The other step I did was to remove each wheel and clean and wax each and clean and dress the fender wells at the same time. The engine also got a quick degreasing rince, dry, and dress up as well. Basically if I were to clean the under carriage this car would be better than when it came off the delivery truck.

Mike (Philips), if you see Mike (Pennington), please let him know he was right on with his recommendation, or forward him this post. I'd also again like to thank him for comming out for our detail seminar.

BTW, it's for sale if anyone's interested.

Very nice reflections in the finished pictures Rick, you did a fantastic job...

And I would like to second the fantastic time we had at the Az. clinic. Now to get a hands on clinic for us sometime soon.

Looks outstanding! I would be interested in a clinic here in AZ, I am ready to make the leap to a rotary from my PC.

Man you just missed it, the clinic here was 3 weeks ago (I think). Nothing that covered rotary use, just the basics. But I think there will be more in the future considering the 70+ people turnout of the last one. Stay tuned.
