    1969 Mustang - Extreme Makeover

Tonight, starting at 5:00pm, we will be performing an extreme makeover to this 1969 Mustang here at Meguiar’s Garage.
    (Thursday, July 08, 2004)

Currently, the finish has no gloss but instead the finish is flat like green primer. Some areas have oxidized so badly, the paint has turned whitish in color.

The Extreme Makeover starts at 5:00pm. If you would like to come down and watch, ask questions, and even help out, please feel free to stop by.

Wow! I won't say anything about the color, but you did a great job restoring that paint!

It was done by PC, the pictures don't do the car justice. It looks absolutely incredible now.

That Color X realy cleaned up that paint. We have a 1939 Willys in our back lot to be stripped of all its useable parts. It is all rusted except for the doors. Just me playing around , I decided to see what Color X would do on a small spot on a door. It took 3 times rubbing until product was gone. You could see your reflection in the spot and this is original 1939 paint.

After washing the car the next step was to remove the oxidation using ColorX with a Meguiar's W-8006 foam polishing pad on Meguiar's G-100a

Here's Brian applying some ColorX onto the face of the W-8006,

This is Brian's first time ever to use the dual action polisher, after a few passes he quickly gets a feel for how it operates and begins working magic to the dull, oxidized finish,

Note the difference in the paint where he has polished with the ColorX and the original oxidized finish,

Brian continued to work around the car until all of the oxidation had been removed,

After cleaning the paint and removing the surface oxidation using ColorX, we then clayed the finish. In a majority of situations, you would clay the car after washing and before using a paint cleaner or a cleaner/wax. In this situation, there was so much oxidation on the surface that it would not clay properly, so we removed the oxidation first.

Here's Brian spraying some Meguiar's Quik Detailer onto the surface of the clay to wet it,

Then, after misting the surface with Quik Detailer to lubricate the finish, Brian begins to clay the surface,

After claying the entire hood, here's what the clay looked like!

Remember, this is above surface contaminants removed after first using a strong cleaner/wax. Don't underestimate the bonded contaminants, after using the ColorX, the surface looked clear and clean, but a quick claying revealed dirt our eyes could not see.
