  • Before/After: My first detail [red '85 Corolla GT-S]

I actually did this a while ago but kept forgetting to post it. I spent two days on this car, learning as I went along, and was very happy with the results.

The car is (was) my father's 1985 Toyota Corolla GT-S, with one of Toyota's fade-happy shades of red. A few areas (bumpers, right front fender) had been repainted and stood out. The car was washed maybe once every 4-6 months and sat under a tree when it wasn't being used.

As you can see, I had quite the canvas to begin learning on!

Ick! So, I bought a small arsenal of Meguiar's products and went to work:

    First, a good wash:

Still badly faded as you see. The paint was full of contaminants too! Time for some clay, then...

The clay bar after doing just half of the hood.

I also had a bad scratch to contend with on the front fender where it meets the door.

After finishing the clay bar, taking my time getting the feel for it, I went for the ColorX to restore the finish to a deep red color.

    Getting there...

Next it was time for the Gold Class Trim Detailer. In retrospect I probably should have done this last, but the black trim was such a light shade of gray I was going crazy. Here's half of the rear end (and the complete spoiler) done - a bad picture but you can still get an idea of the difference.

Finally it was ready for NXT Tech Wax.

    Ahhh, much better!

When it was said and done, I felt the touch-up job on the deep scratch turned out reasonably well.

I spent more time with the usual little things like wheels/tires, and also used PlastX on the lights. During this time I realized I hadn't used Gold Class Trim Detailer on the headlight housings (since they were hidden before), so I worked that stuff in everywhere I could find black trim. And there was plenty of it on this car!

That was about it for the exterior. Here is the finished result:

Hope you enjoyed this little story of my experiments. This 171,000 mile car was a fine guinea pig.

Nice work! Clay looked a little dirty... I see you have CD2 Engine Detailer, how do you like it? I have it but only used it once. I like the look it left behind but the product itself and application worried me a little. Just don't want to damage anything.

Its amazing what a good clean and a bit of tlc will do to a car.

I hope you are proud of yourself, i know i would be

Yes it is. The Toyota Sprinter AE86 Trueno was sold in North America as the Corolla hatchback (in SR-5 and GT-S models).

Awesome job on the makeover, Bryan. Now that it looks as good as new, you should start practicing some drifting skills with it.

I kind of got into drifting when i had a 300ZX but then i sold it and i can't drift in my FWD accord to i am thinking about getting one

accoding to the drift bible some people that can put a supra or skyline sideways can't put a AE86 sideways

Nice work with the car. Love the colour I'm sure it now puts some of the "new" cars on the block to shame.

It already has one. [Factory option here] I have been known to drift from time to time, but I find my SC MR2 easier. A stock Corolla GT-S has very little power and lots of body roll.

                      ---

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. I honestly didn't think I would get results like this when I started on the car. Everything was done by hand, as I wanted to keep things low budget and simple. That's why it took me 2 days.

The engine came out okay. It's not the prettiest thing to begin with.

Those wiper arms could use a repaint, eh?

I do like CD2 Engine Detailer quite a bit. In fact it used to come in a pack with CD2 Engine Degreaser, which worked wonderfully. I can't find that anymore, and I haven't run across a satisfactory degreaser since.

My old RX-7 had a very clean engine bay that detailed up nicely with CD2:

gb387 - You mentioned the clay bar looked a little dirty. Do you mean there was extra dirt on it, not just the contaminants it removed? I wouldn't be surprised if washing the car didn't remove all the dirt - the paint surface was so rough! Any suggestions if I run across that again?

Car looks great. Really good results, especially for doing it all by hand.

                              Major Kudos dude...

First, by doing thing by hand (a lot more satisfying IMO), second by using off-the-shelf stuff like ColorX...

Old, red paint are a joy to restore
