*old* #2 & PC

I just did a dark green (Hunter Green?) Solara for a neighbor's friend. The car has moderate swirling and several severe scratches from who knows what.

I still have some of the old version (rotary use only) #2 and I figured I'd experiment a bit. I used a cutting pad and the 5 setting on the PC and also used a bit more pressure than I normally do (I tend to run light on the pressure) keeping my arm speed way down, working each panel for a good length of time.

Even though it was for rotary use only, the #2 did a fantastic job of deep cleaning the paint and removing >90% of the swirls and scratches. Sorry no pics, but the camera was left on & the battery was dead.

Did it leave any noticeable marring?

This is a case where you may have just gotten lucky, you also have experience and skill to aid you. As a company, we cannot recommend the combination you used for a number of reasons one of them being we don't know the skill level of all customers.

If a person was to introduce marring with the cutting pad/PC/#83 combo, do you think it would be hard to remove the marring with the polishing pad/PC combo, with, say, #80?

Depends on how hard the paint is. This is one of the reasons we don't ever recommend using our cutting pad with the dual action polisher, it's too aggressive and if it does introduce marring, most people panic instead of trying to remove the marring with a less aggressive product.

I agree that I wouldn't recommend this to any but those who have some time under their belt with a PC.

That being said, I used a Lake Country cutting pad and I don't know how that compares to a Megs cutting pad, but the only defects in the paint were the deeper scratches & marring that was already there and because of their location (on edges or near corners) and depth, I didn't feel comfortable trying to get them completely out.

I finished with a single coat of Color-X. THe woman who owned the car was exctatic with the results and is going to schedule a time for me to deep clean the interior of the car to match the outside.

That seems to be the norm with Meguiar's products and a machine like the PC.
