  • SCRATCH X IS "DA BOMB"!my experience!

I purchased a new 2005 cadillac cts 2 weeks ago and first day i had it, my wife was driving and one of the kids or mother in-law leans against the car with something and puts like a clear coat rub/fine scratch about 3 inches long into the passenger door right above the door handle that could be seen clear as day..i was as you can imagine..especially first day..very freaked out. this is the nicest new car i've owned and first day, it gets damaged. before i raced to my local detailer or dealership to get this fixed probably costing me at least $100 bucks and fretting about how many 100 dollar bills i was going to be throwing at the car to keep away the small scratches...i decided to do some online research and came across the mequiar line of products. i figured for $19 canadian for a tube, what the heck..worth a try...my car is blue chip in colour which is a very dark blue. i put some on and had read enough to realize i couldn't just put some on, wipe it off when dry and scratch gone..about 3 applications later, didn't seem to be any better..i kept at it and after about 10 applications..amazing..aside from a spot that is a little deeper that is a pinpoint size at best but is still completely coloured ..just a very small depression that i may work at some more..but the scratch is basically GONE!..I AM THRILLED WITH THE RESULTS and would rather have a product that requires a bit of elbow grease then overdoing it.. i am so happy with it that i have bought the gold class wax and the deep crystal car wash as well by mequiar..all in along with some good quality micro towels, washing mitt ,terry towels and goo gone..i spent $98..but i have a ton of supplies and i'm sure dramatic savings on maintenance of the body in the future.

    WELL DONE MEGUIAR'S!

PS- before i got educated i bought a bottle of mother's scratch remover (yep...influenced by one of those car rebuild shows...)

didn't do a damn thing for the scratch despite many applications except making it "shine"..

totally agree..well worth the time and exercise for the peace of mind and money saved..will highly recommend to my friends and co-workers! this site has excellent information from the forums to the faq page as well...a big reason why i was able to make the decision to go with these products.

I recently went through a similar experience.

I stopped at my local Walgreen's for 15-20 minutes about a month ago. When I came back out I noticed that the trunk lid of the car had a copious amount of fine scratches along the width. Needless to say I was infuriated. I surmise someone had set down their products along my trunk as they were trying to fumble with their keys and dragged said products across as they were loading them into their vehicle.

When I returned home, I grabbed a liter of water and went right to work using Meguiars Scratch-X. After reading many of the posts on the forum here, I knew I was not going to be done within 15 minutes.

I found that scratch-x can be a slight bit difficult to remove after letting it haze on the finish, so I used some light mists of NXT Speed Detailer to ease that process. I worked on small area at a time, approximately 4" by 4". After just over two hours, and countless re-applications the trunk-lid finally was in pre-vandalized condition.

I am just thankful that there is a product like Scratch-X out there that can save one from filing an insurance claim and avoid having a part of the car refinished!

Just to chime in to make sure everyone is on the same page...

In the Meguiar's line of products, the only products that need to dry to a haze or until they swipe clear are our waxes.

Compounds, Paint Cleaners, Cleaner/Polishes and Pure Polishes should always be removed after they have been applied to the finish and worked in. After you have applied and worked-in any of these products into and against the finish, their job is then done and you can and should remove them. Allowing these types of products to dry will not add any benefit to the paint or improve the process and will often times make removal more difficult.

If you read the back label on ScratchX and note that it states,

Work one section at a time and let product dry before removing excess...

This is wrong and the directions on the label are being changed to correct this.

another reason to use the product..a representative who is willing to admit an error was made..and it's being corrected..rather than arguing with a customer simply to back a product..thank you and that jives totally with my experience..at first i let it dry to a powder and noticed i got best results using it "wet"

Thanks Mike for the update! You know, I was reading the directions, (because it was the first time I had used the product in six months since purchasing it), and it occured to me that something seemed off as I was using it, but decided to proceed with the instructions as on the label.

There are a few other small spots on the car that I want to try scratch-x with. I'll remove it "wet" this time and try to have my Pollack brain to remember to take pictures to document.

What about Deep Crystal System Paint Cleaner?

How do I know when to use Deep Crystal System Paint Cleaner & Scratch X?

Must I use Deep Crystal System Polish before Wax?

Always try the least aggressive product first (Deep Crystal #1 in this case) before trying something stronger.....If DC #1 does the job of removing fine scratches, then there's no need for anything stronger.

Deep Crystal #1 is a good product, but for deeper scratches it takes a product like ScratchX in order to remove them.

DC polish is just an option.......It's sort of like a beauty product.....It gives the paint an extra sheen, plus the polishing oils are good for the paint.
