  • Problem with NXT

I have used NXT wax for about a year now. My previous car was a black Lexus and it worked very well.

My current car is a black 04 GTO and I am not having good results. I have used it three times on this car with negative results each time. The first two times I used the, GC wash, GC paint cleaner, then the GC polish, followed with the NXT wax. Both times the finsh turned out spolchy. This would go away after a two or three washings.

Today I did not use the cleaner or the polish. I just used the NXT wax and the results were still splochy. It looks great from a distance but once you start to get closer it look very bad.

I use the applicator pad that came with the wax to apply it, removed the wax with clean terry towels, and buffed it with microfiber.

Does any one have any ideas what is causing this?

Apply a thinner coat and allow it to dry longer. Let me know if that helps.

Congrats on the new ride! I have an Impluse Blue GTO, and the NXT should work very well on it.

Does the finish feel completely smooth? You may need to clay your goat. I had to clay mine when I first took it home from the dealer. It was covered in rail dust! You may have that or similar contaminants.

Do you have a DA machine polisher? I would highly recommend getting one. I would use a more aggressive cleaner than the CG line. They discontinued their CG cleaner conditioner many years ago. Maybe it is too old.

If you have clayed, I would try some #80 Speed Glaze, MPPC, or the new reformualted #2. BTW, any of these products can be used by hand.

Here is what NXT Paste looks like on my goat:

And the NXT Liquid will give similar results.

Thanks. Your blue goat looks great. The finish is very smooth so I don't think it needs to be clayed. The cleaner I used was the Deep Crystal ( was mistaken on the GC) and was brand new when I first used it last fall. So was the paint polish.

Unfortuately I live in condo and don't have access to power down in the garage, so the power buffers are difficult so I have to rely on elbow grease (fortuately the goat is not that big)

I did put a fairly thick coat on but made sure it was completely dry. I will try a thinner coat next time.

          Hi blkgto,

Apply a thin coating to only one panel, for example the hood or deck lid. Allow to dry until it Swipes Clear, then remove using your softest removal cloth. Then, apply a second coat, again this should be a thin coating, not too much but not so little that it's hard to apply a coating over the surface. Allow to dry until it swipes clear and then remove.

Two thin coats of any wax should leave a streak free finish if applied and removed correctly. If you can make one panel look good, you can make the rest of the car look good.

If this doesn't work, then post back here and we'll either trouble shoot some more or escalate this to a higher level.

good advice mike, i was thinking the same thing. my guess is that the wax isn't setting long enough, thus when wiping it... it smears, smudges, streaks, etc...

A DA polisher can do wonders for a car's finish. If Mike's suggestion doesn't help much, then I would think about getting one and maybe a power converter to run it off of the car's battery with if you can't get access to AC power.......Just a thought anyway.

Or, you could try this IF you want a orbital, I don't know how well it works though or how long the batteries hold their charge.

                  Paste or Liquid

Did you try the Paste or Liquid? I have never had either version streak for me, but if humidity could be an issue. I have had the Spray Booster Wax streak when the humididty is very high. And the humidity is at its highest in the evening so keep that in mind.

The Paste Tech Wax sets up more quickly and there is less problem with removal if you apply too heavy of a coat. Since you are waxing by hand you may find that you prefer the paste version.

Also I have a question. I don't want to get too far off topic but this is a good time to ask. Do you have this problem all over your goat, or is it just on the hood? The reason I ask is that the paint on my hood chips very easily. I visited my dealer body shop to get an estimate to repair some hail damage. He told me my hood had been repainted!!! This had to have happened before my car was delivered. I have seen reports of many GTOs being damaged in shipping. Hoods and bumpers have been repainted, replaced, etc. This dealer was not where I bought the car but I still appreciated his honesty.

The dealer where I bought the car has changed ownership and they had little interest in repainting a ding on my front bumper, that I knew about and that occurred before delivery. It is very minor, that is why I didn't reject the car. Impulse Blue with a blue interior is very hard to find. The dealer where I have my car serviced did fix the bumper N/C.

At least the hood repaint matches the rest of the car, it even has the orange peel LOL! But still it chips much more easily than the paint on my '01 WS6 TA.

My point of bringing this up is that maybe your hood, or maybe even other panels too, have been repainted and that is why you are having some issues. You can tell if the hood was repainted by carefully looking at the area around the windshield washer nozzles. If you see a subtle paint buildup there it has been repainted.

I am still mad about the repaint, but I will put up with stuff like this to have a fast car! Where else can you get a new car with this much power for less than 30 grand?

                    Hey,

Just like the others have said, I can not empahsize enough how important it is to apply a thin, but even coat of product. That is also the reason why it is suggested to apply 2 coats, to ensure total, even coverage. Also, perform the swipe test as Mike pointed out as this also makes a tremendous difference!
