  • Body shop safe detailer

    Hello,

After every wash, I dry my car and then I spray and wipe off some Quick detailer or NXT Speed detailer to remove / prevent any water spots. Now I've got repainted my hood recently (oven dried at 60 dgs Celsius).
I saw that no one of detailers I use are body shop safe: http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39257

I was thinking about getting Last touch or Ultimate Quik Detailer, but I see they also are not body shop safe. Also Ultimate Quik Wax is not body shop safe...

I hardly believe that these products would damage the paint, but nevertheless I’m not about to try... Is there anything I could use instead, to give a last touch to my car after washing? How long do I have to wait to use these products? How long do I have to wait before I use SwirlX, Gold Class wax and M16 wax. Some say 30/60/90 days, so I'm quite confused. Thanks for replies!

According to the list, Final Inspection is body shop safe (i.e., paintable).

As Shane stated, M34 Final Inspection is your product to go.

Your painter should know how long you need to wait to let fresh paint fully out-gas. No wax, no paint cleaners, but pure polish can be used (M07 Show Car Glaze is excellent for that).

A paint cleaner can be used.

You can call them to ask, but 60 days is a good guess if not.

The reason you hear different times is because of different paints and curing processes. For air-dried lacquer, for example, 90 days were recommended to allow the paint to cure. Modern-day baked urethanes cure much faster. 30 days should be plenty. Most new cars are on the lot within 30 days of being painted, and I've never seen a problem arise from being waxed too soon.

OK, I see that Final inspection would be the perfect product. I have a problem, since there is no Meguiars seller in our country, I order all these products from US or UK (which are still cheaper if I bought them in EU). But this means that there could pass 30 days since spraying new paint, before I get the product...

But I also have NXT Glass cleaner in stock. The list of “paintable” products (the link I listed above, thank you Michael!) shows that this product IS body shop safe. Can I use this to give a final wipe on fresh painted hood? I know that this product is not made for that - but I just want to clean the surface without damaging the paint/clear coat.

                Re: Body shop safe detailer

                From Meguiar's Knowledge Center:

Aftermarket / refinish paint jobs continue to cure for two to three months after being sprayed onto the finish. During this curing time paint manufactures recommend NOT to apply a "wax" or "protectant" to the finish. This is because solvents and other volatile paint components are still evaporating out of the paint.
However, you can safely use many of Meguiar's washes and polishes during this curing period on fresh paint without fear of causing any damage. Many of Meguiar's polishes are wax and silicone free, and will not seal the surface of the finish. This means the paint can continue to properly cure throughout the recommended curing period.
Meguiar's fresh paint safe polishesand of course M34 Final Inspection is safe as well.

It might be worth noting that a product being 'paintable', and safe for use on 'curing paint' is two different things.

I would want a regular QD product, not glass cleaner, to clean paint safely.

I'm putting M07 on my car very soon, that's no problem. As I said in my previous post, I believe that M34 would be the perfect product for last wipe (of my freshly painted hood) at the moment. The problem is that I can't just buy the product in local store, I have to order it overseas and this means long time.

I am about to give the last wipe off after wash with NXT Speed Detailer, of course except the hood.
And now the question: NXT Glass Cleaner is listed as "paintable" product. Can I spay it on freshly painted hood? (As I stated above I know it is not the perfect product for that, but I just want to safely clean the surface.)

I don't see any sense listing NXT Glass Cleaner as body shop safe, if it doesn't get in contact with fresh paint...

If you accidentally over spray your fresh paint with NxT Glass Cleaner it won't cause any problems but if you spray it directly into your fresh paint and use it as a detailer it may not act so well. It's meant to be a glass cleaner and it has been formulated that way.

Do you have access to Optimum No Rinse (ONR) ? It can be turned into a quick detailer with proper water dilution.

Paintable means you can paint over it without having to wash and degrease the surface.

If you spray some glass cleaner, it is likely to blow around the in air, and land on the body panels. The painter can paint over that safely.
