Re: The Junkman not likeing Meguiar's consumer products?

Let me toss in another card here... as a long time user of the consumer range.. I would have to say that pound for pound, they are very very effective in doing what they say they will. To me, it stands to reason.. most sales are to guys like me (consumer) and I walk easily if I don't get results. If they don't work, the company can forget about staying alive. Pro sales won't easily sustain it.

Pros necessarily have to be able to produce a 100% result on the material that us consumers can't easily fix. they need products that allow their craftmanship to be expressed and be workable with the tools of their trade.

IMHO a pro with the pro range and tools will always beat the result that I can get with the consumer range by hand. To me that seems natural and the way it should be! The point to me, as a 'Joe Blow' is that I can get a fantastic result with the consumer line - and it truth, I probably get better than I deserve, Lol!

I think the Junkman misses the point.. I believe that anyone good at polishing and detailing will get a great result with many of the products on the market and it will be the amount of work needed to get that finish and subtle final effects that will make the difference for them. For people like me, the equation is different - I want the best I can get in a few hours with no or minimal tools and I believe that I am just one of many in "the thundering horde" like me. For people like me, the Meg's consumer range is just great... I can't easily imagine what they could do to make it better other than a product where I could smile at the car and it would clean itself...

I think he makes his point perfectly fine - he just recommends to others what he likes to use based on his past experiences. So that means he only recommends the Megs professional line. He's not saying the consumer line isn't good, he's just saying he's has bad experiences in the past (1990's) - however he also acknowledges that consumer line products have changed and improved since then.

Even if you don't agree with Junkman, at least you can understand where he's coming from now...

Oh, and for the record peter.kelly, I agree, in terms of bang-for-your-buck, Meguiars consumer line is excellent.

PS. Good to see another Aussie on here!

Re: The Junkman not likeing Meguiar's consumer products?

          Thanks for the welcome Dave.

In defense of Peter's post, I made mine about 8 hours before his. My post had to be approved before it posted (too many words maybe ). His post showed up this morning before mine was ever here. Then mine showed up (with all the mistakes that I corrected in the version that should have posted), slotted before his. Thus, he didn't have a chance to read my response, although it appears that he posted after me.

Just want to clear that up. Now it woul be nice if I could go back and edit my grammar errors!

Thanks for the clarifications Junkman! Rumors and misinformation is rampant no matter where you go and for you to come on here and give your side to the story in my opinion is very professional. I've seen the Autopia discussions where they were pretty brutal (Meg's, Adams....ect), I guess some people are set in there ways and experiences.

Again I love what you do for the detailing community regardless of who you represent, especially for the newbs like myself! I hope to see you in action up in Carlisle sometime this year.

Also thank you for your service Marine!

back at you sir and thank YOU for your service also.

The novice community is my targeted audience but even professional guys tell me that they have learned from my videos. That is a key reason I made my first set of videos. I was hoping and have received many helpful bits of information from equipment to my process. I cannot stress how useful we are as a unit to the profession instead of being bits and pieces, spreading contradicting information to the novices. The only thing that causes is confusion among the novice users and the bottom line is, they may never decide on any product. When that happens, we all loose.

The military had a big influence on the way I live my life and the way I think. As with anything, united we stand, divided we fall. Together we can help the industry grow, and weed out the yahoos who are out here ripping unknowing customers off. That is way more important to me than who's name appears on the bottle. Technique and training trumps all and together, we can be a force to reckon with.

Spread the word and spread the love. Don't hate, participate.

Good post Junkman. I've seen your videos before and they are _very_ well done. Because of this thread I went back and watched a few more (the ones on praying the pad with a quick detailer solution and using it 3-4 times without adding more product. Really good information.

I also learned something about Adam's products. I like the idea of keeping everything simple. This was one of the problems I had with Megs.... 21, 26, 80, 81, 105, 205, etc... it takes a flow chart just to keep them all straight (even then, I think it's still confusing). I do like Megs approach to pads. But LC pad colors are not too bad. Because of this, I might look into Adams products in the future.

FWIW, some detailers are paid their worth.

Junkman - Thanks indeed for the defence! It was very gracious of you to do that.
Also, after reading your "war and peace" - I certainly understand better where you're coming from and it does seem a fair call.

BTW - Dave, likewise great to see another Aussie here!

Meguiars OTC products can deliver equivalent results as many of the non-OTC products. Of course, it requires someone who has the right procedure. Just because it comes from Walmart, it is not automatically inferior in any way. The problem is that the OTC term is often used as a derogatory comment when discussing car care products.

I think he was responding to what I said about detailing pay. I said that they don't make nearly enough money for all the work they do. I honestly feel that way because rubbing on cars all day is back breaking work.

I on the other hand work for a company called The PC Surgeon, Inc. If you Google it, you'll find out that I own the company too. Much easier work than detailing and the pay is much better too.

Hey there, Junkman. Welcome to MOL and thanks for explaining your views on OTC products. And as others have already commented, thanks especially for your YouTube videos, which I have found both instructive and entertaining. You have a gift. Keep up the good work!

May I recommend one Meguiar's OTC product for you to try out sometime--Ultimate Compound. Its cutting power lies somewhere between M105 and M205. I find it to be much easier to use with my dual action polisher than M105 because of its longer working time, and it finishes down nicely for a compound. At least that has been my experience. And because it's OTC, it's readily available and competitively priced.

                                Cheers,
