Am I correct in taking this to mean that if you have a 110, you can use PlastX and a finishing pad and get the same results?

I'd like to clean both our vehciles up a bit and I have a new G110v2 on the way along with some finishing pads. Will I be good to go to simply add PlastX to the mix?

No, the results will depend on the original condition of the lights. Just like paint, where swirls may come off fairly easily with the right products and technique, deep marring or scratches are much more difficult.

Plastx when used with the G110 and the correct pad will do a terrific job on moderate hazing. But if the UV coating on the light has failed, then wet sanding is required. Years ago, I was the first person on MOL to bring up the issue of this coating as until then no one realized it had one. I found it the hard way while buffing out pair of lights with the rotary polisher! Once this coating becomes compromised, you will need to get more aggressive with the process.

Now, the issue, when you remove the protective UV coating, it will not take long for it to go yellow again. Proper maintenance with the correct product is critical. While there are spray coatings from SEMS etc that are designed to be used on headlights, they requires a pretty substantial amount of knowledge and many specialized tools to make the lights to look like new.

In other words, if your lights are bad enough to be replaced, then you have nothing to lose by trying to correct them because if it does not turn out, you will have to buy news ones like you would have in the beginning.

BUT if done correctly, you can make the lights look like brand new!

Re: *NEW* Meguiar's Headlight Restoration Kit!!!

          Thanks, Tim!

Ours aren't bad enough to need replacing. They are still safe and work great, but are just hazed up in just a few spots enough that they don't look crystal clear across the surface.

Is there anything I should avoid in trying to clean this up? I don't mind putting in the elbow grease and learning the processes, I just don't want to turn a minor blemish into a full replacement job because I screwed it up.

Is there a way to tell if the UV coat is intact and just slightly marred?

I've heard talk about making sure to wax the headlights when the car is waxed. Is this enough to protect the lens if the UV coating has to be sanded down or is there a better way to go? I'd like to get as close to a permanant solution as possible with out risking damage by over stepping my abilities.

And remembering that back then I was wishing meguiars had something like this then.LOL
