  • What products to use on my 1988 Volvo Bertone

I finally got my Volvo,& I now want to spoil it with Meguiars products. I just need to find the right combination to start with. To start, the paint is SILVER in excellent condition, believe it or not, I think the wheels are aluminum. I'm really not sure about the wheels, will probably have to go to a tire shop & ask them. Interior is soft Italian leather, combination brownish grey&black. Real wood trim, not plastic or imitation. And then the dash & consul is mostly plastic. My real objective is to be able to get the dust & dirt of of the corners, all the small little places the average person doesn't clean. UNLIKE US GEEK CAR FOLKS THAT ARE DRIVEN TO DETAIL. I've really enjoyed that qualify of people who are loyal to (this word processor just won't let me type M-E-G-U-I-A-R-S) products. SO the big question is. What Do I get to start my process? Paint, trim, wheels, leather, & dash., Oh I don't_want to forget the wheels as well. I look road to all suggestion from the people that have done this process before & know the right products! Thanks, Ron

Well it depends on what route u want to go. U can't go wrong with the ultimate lineup. Or u can go with the detailer line which is more cost effective for people who detail their cars all the time. U will hear that one is not better than the other, they just have different uses. I would suggest u read some old threads and learn a little about the different lineups.

Do you have a DA polisher? Or will you be working by hand? Either way, I'd say start off with claying the whole car after using Gold Class suds to wash.. Then Ultimate Compound, next Ultimate Polish & finish off by protecting the optimum shine you've created with Ultimate Liquid Wax. You also don't want to forget to pick up a bottle of Ultimate Quik Wax to use in the future[mostly used after washing to help extend the life of your innitial ULW application]
I understand you said the paint is in good condition.. But since it's a 26 yr. old car, the odds of it needing extra TLC [such as clay & Ultimate Compound are greater] Plus, it'll be worth it if you really want to achieve that true "Meguiars" look you're after.

As far as the interior, if it's in good shape, I'd stick to a routine of giving the leather seats, along with the door panels & dash a quik vacumm with the soft brush attachment prior to using Gold Class wipes to provide light maintenence cleaning and leave a nice finish behind. [IMO it leaves a great look that's just right on shine factor once it dries] Some people preffer the GC leather cleaner/conditioner in the spray vs. the wipes, but I've never tried the spray, so I can only recommend the wipes from my experience. I've always been pleased with the results.
A good + about the GC wipes is that they can also be used on your vinyl door panels & dashboard. Along with leather steering wheel if you have 1.

Don't forget about the carpet/mats. That makes as big of a difference as the rims/tires do for your exterior look.. I'm not exactly sure what Meguiars product most people use to clean the mats, but I personally use "Tuff Stuff" with a new dishwashing brush to scrub, and it worked pretty damn amazing in my experience with it.

Rims/tires: Get the appropriate Meguiars wheel spray on cleaner for your type of wheels.[I have chome wheels so it's Megs Hot Rims Chrome 4 me] You might want to aggitate that wheel cleaner with a soft brush to really get any grime & brake dust and maintenence should be alot easier to deal with in the future. Finish off by protecting your clean rims with Megs Brake Dust Barrier while you're at it. It's supposed to make future rim cleaning a breeze.
As far as the tires, I personally use a different brand to "shine" my tires. But since you want Meguiars all around, I'd say Megs Endurance Gel applied with either a lil sponge applicator or a foam pad should be a solid choice.

      Trim: Ultimate Protectant

Glass: Dont forget the glass. You know what to do...

Use the 2 bucket method and a proper mit for future washing. Buy 1 or 2 Meguiars "Water Magnets" and only use them [no other kind of towels to dry your car] Don't let anyone else wash your car. And hopefully it'll be easy "maintinence" from here on out

Good luck! And congrats on your new ride:thumbsup

Re: What products to use on my 1988 Volvo Bertone

This is a good kit. It has everything you need.

All you need is a clay bar kit and ultimate quik wax. I would recommend ultimate quik detailer as well.

Tire dressing - hot shine and nxt insane shine are on sale at autozone right now. Endurance gel is extremely shiny but be sure to wipe of the excess so it does not sling.

Brake dust barrier is a nice product. It makes washing your wheels easier after you first get them clean. You could also use ultimate wax on them.

If your wheels have brake dust on them I would get the proper wheel and tire cleaner. The DUB wheel cleaner also works good.

Are you going to do this by hand or machine? I highly recommend a DA.

Pro products the I use are:
        M105
        M205
        M21
        M26
        D143
        D163
        D4510
        D156
        M135
        D111
        D103 (discontinued) - D101 is still available
        99 Grand Prix
        02 Camaro SS

For cost effective, go with the Ultimate line of products. Use two bucket method, wash with lamb mit and dry with waffle weave towel. 90% of swirls are installed during washing and drying. Its always easier and costs less to maintain than to correct. Have fun and keep it shiny...
